Could there be anywhere more perfect than the Greek Islands for a honeymoon? Greece is the land of Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty and passion, blessed with landscapes so lovely that every new day feels like a pinch-me moment. If your dream honeymoon backdrop is golden sunsets, a deserted, peacock-blue bay or a dazzling white cottage draped in electric pink bougainvillea, the Greek Islands are just what you need. Fill your days pottering to secluded coves in your own little boat, exploring ancient ruins or vibrant Venetian towns, or just stretching out in blissful peace at a private honeymoon villa with its own pool.

From the rugged landscapes of Crete to the pint-sized perfection of Paxos, the Ionian Islands to the Sporades, with a couple of mainland options added for extra variety, here are eleven of the very best Greek island destinations to consider for an unforgettable honeymoon.

Crete
Greece's largest island blends dramatic landscapes, beautiful beaches, historic towns and outstanding food. Crete is large enough to combine different experiences in one honeymoon; dive into unique ancient civilisations, hike down deep gorges to the sea and discover Europe’s only natural palm forest, on the edge of stunning Vai beach. The choice of accommodation is equally wide, from simple beach suites to luxury villas with a private pool.
Best for: variety, food and adventure
Choose Crete if you want a honeymoon that combines impressive beaches with exploration, history, hiking, waterfront tavernas and a wide choice of romantic accommodation.
Paxos
Petite Paxos has an intimate, unhurried atmosphere that suits couples looking for quiet, character and natural beauty. Its coastline is dotted with sea caves, hidden beaches and tantalisingly clear water, while pretty harbours such as Gaios invite long lunches and evening strolls. Olive groves cover much of the island, adding to its secluded, romantic character – visit in late May or early June to experience the magic of tiny fireflies glowing amongst the olives after dark.
Best for: seclusion, sailing and slow seaside days
Choose Paxos if your ideal honeymoon involves pottering along an enchanting coastline in your own little boat, dropping anchor for a secluded swim and seafront dining in some of the prettiest harbours in the Med.

Ithaca
Steeped in mythology as the legendary home of Odysseus, lush green Ithaca has a timeless beauty that feels deeply romantic. It’s a genuine get-away-from-it-all destination, where the roads are winding, the views implore you to linger and the pace is delightfully human. There’s activity if you want it – walking, diving and boat hire are all wonderful ways to explore Ithaca – but essentially this is a place to rest up, slow down and let the sensory pleasures of sea and sunshine work their magic.
Best for: unspoilt landscapes, quiet relaxation
Choose Ithaca if you want a more authentic Greek honeymoon destination where myth and history intertwine and walking its quiet green hills feels like strolling through a film set.
Kefalonia
It’s hard to imagine a more fitting place for a Greek honeymoon than Kefalonia, an island so lovely that it was the natural choice to film the heart-stoppingly romantic Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Think dazzlingly blue water, white limestone cliffs, olive-green hills and picturesque settlements, from stunning Fiskardo and Assos in the north, to the relative buzz of Argostoli, where loggerhead turtles bob up in the harbour looking for scraps from the daily fishing catch.
Best for: beaches, boat trips and turtle spotting
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, offering wonderful variety and an airport for fuss-free travel, whilst retaining the idyllic island feel. Choose Kefalonia for iconic beaches and a great choice of smaller luxury honeymoon villas with their own swimming pool.

Corfu
Beyond its signature blue-green water, pristine beaches and olive-clad hills, Corfu feels a touch more sophisticated than the other Ionian Islands. Wander through Corfu Town’s shaded streets and grand Venetian buildings, visit the old fort, stop for coffee in Liston Square or enjoy lunch in one of the many upmarket little restaurants. The north east of Corfu is the scenic highlight of the island – hire yourself a little motor boat, pack a picnic and spend romantic days exploring jewel-coloured coves you can only reach by sea.
Best for: eating out, exploring by boat, quiet sophistication
Corfu rewards couples looking for stylish villa accommodation, quality dining and an old town with plenty of atmosphere. Nature lovers can head for the hills or beach hop by boat from one gorgeous little cove to the next.
Zakynthos
Zakynthos is all about that incredible Ionian-blue water and white cliffs, which frame the famous Shipwreck Beach to such dramatic effect. The Blue Caves are another must-see, but for couples looking to escape the obvious places, the north east of the island also shelters traditional villages nestled into ancient olive groves. Head to the west coast for spectacular sunset views, or explore the sparkling little coves and inlets on the eastern side for quieter swim spots and waterfront tavernas where you can dine beneath the stars.
Best for: landscapes filled with colour and drama
Choose Zakynthos if you want a honeymoon backdrop of sea caves and sparkling water, with a vibrant little capital town for a spot of culture, shopping and delicious dining on the catch of the day.
Skopelos
Skopelos has that classic Greek-island look: whitewashed houses, unspoilt beaches, flower-filled balconies and winding lanes that have been immortalised in many movies, most famously of course Mamma Mia! A photo stop by the Agios Ioannis wedding chapel is a honeymoon must. Skopelos Town is a Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty, with a charming Chora (old town) packed with restaurants and speciality shops, offering just enough to keep things interesting without being over-developed – the perfect honeymoon destination.
Best for: classic whitewashed buildings, quiet beaches, the Mamma Mia! chapel
A honeymoon on Skopelos delivers beautiful beaches, great restaurants and a generous helping of authentic Greece in its lively harbour. Choose a luxury villa within walking distance of Skopelos Town to max out your experience.

Sivota & Epirus
Pretty Sivota sits in its own natural harbour just across the water from Corfu, with lots of uninhabited little islands waiting to be discovered just offshore. The harbour is the heart of town, with a selection of waterfront restaurants for romantic evenings by the sea. Sivota seduces with its island vibe, but the mainland location means the whole Epirus region lies on the doorstep, ripe for exploration. Visit the unique and protected slate villages of Zagoria, hike the extraordinary Vikos Gorge and sample the best local fizz produced in the Pindus mountains.
Best for: explorers, beach lovers, active holidays
With a stunning 8-suite hotel and a selection of wonderful villas, Sivota offers high quality honeymoon accommodation, a fabulous coastline for lazy beach days and almost unlimited options to explore. Think Greek mainland convenience with a chilled island atmosphere.
Lefkada
Lefkada makes exploring the Ionian coast wonderfully easy. You can drive straight onto the island across a causeway from the mainland: less travel time means more honeymoon time. Lefkada – or Lefkas – is famed for dazzling turquoise water and white beaches, which give the island its name. There are excellent watersports at Nydri and Vassiliki, mini islands to explore and a charming small capital filled with small squares and tempting restaurants. The accommodation is perfect for a honeymoon, whether you want private villa for two or a romantic small hotel.
Best for: easy access, watersports, honeymoon hotels
Choose Lefkada if you want dramatic beaches but also fancy road trips, sailing, watersports, mountain villages and accommodation that’s genuinely honeymoon-worthy.

Meganissi
Pared back simplicity meets upmarket accommodation on irresistible Meganissi, a tiny gem that punches well above its weight in terms of honeymoon villas. Laze the days away in a villa just metres from the sapphire blue sea, mix your own cocktails on your terrace as dusk falls and then wander into one of the three island villages for dinner on the water. It’s a perfect place to hire a small boat – no licence required – and discover the quiet magic of a coastline little changed in 100s of years.
Best for: peace, privacy and the deep blue sea
When you’re looking for a complete rest and reset but don’t want to skimp on luxury surroundings, choose Meganissi and look forward to a blissful week of boats, beaches and beautifully indulgent accommodation.
The Peloponnese
Thinking about the Greek mainland for your honeymoon? The Peloponnese is a scenically stunning and history-rich region, blessed with golden beaches, crimson sunsets and cerulean seas. Here you’ll find not only high quality villas and luxury small hotels but also some of the longest and best beaches in Greece. Favourite spots include Agios Nikitas and Stoupa, the former more fishing village than resort, and both blessed with a wide choice of great restaurants offering traditional and more modern Greek dishes. It’s an unrivalled honeymoon destination if you like to explore, from farmers’ markets in Kalamata to Ancient Olympia, site of the original games. The mountains are high and the roads are mostly excellent – just pack your sense of adventure and you’re good to go.
Best for: road trips, history, Greek food with a contemporary twist
There’s so much variety here to make a honeymoon trip very personal. Fill your days with historic sites, epic drives and heavenly views, or keep it local pottering between beach, pool and taverna for true relaxation at your own pace.
