We hold a great deal of affection for the southwest corner of Crete which, like so much of the island, feels unique and harbours an identity all its own. And though it takes a little more time to get there, the effort is more than rewarded by everything the area has to offer. Within walking distance of charming Paleochora, we are particularly pleased to have found the Amphitheatre Suites whose owners, George and Giota, share our passion for impeccable service and attention to detail.
Extremely spacious and beautifully designed, these elegantly furnished one and two-bedroom suites each have well-equipped kitchen area and comfortable living space leading out onto a private terrace overlooking the warm waters of southern Crete. Two-bedroom ground floor suites have the added benefit of private pools while the one-bedroom suites enjoy use of the communal swimming pool which feels exclusive and intimate.
Beaches, bars and tavernas are a 10-minute stroll away and it’s only 15 minutes’ walk to the colourful and bohemian centre of Paleochora. Quintessentially Greek, there’s a buzz of creativity amongst the narrow streets of the Old Town; enchanting by day and utterly bewitching by night.
Giota can arrange boat trips from the little port here, whisking you across the water to the pale pink sands of Elafonisi, the extraordinary village of Loutro, or perhaps Gavdos - the most southerly Greek island of them all. This glorious corner of Crete has much to discover inland too, including the herb-scented Anidri gorge and the wild, rugged beauty of the Grammeno peninsula – a magical, unspoilt place and the epitome of the road less travelled.

Giota has the most beautiful property in a fantastic setting and is the best host ever! Nothing is too much trouble for her and her team. Paleochora has very good tavernas and so many to choose from. We hope to come back – next time maybe with some of the family.
Once again a brilliant holiday from Simpson Travel. We stayed in the Amphitheatre Suites in Paleochora Crete which is a stunning property in an amazing location. The host, Giota is the most wonderful host ever.
We’ve had a wonderful 2-week stay in Demeter. The bed is comfy and the views of the sea and Paleochora are lovely. We have enjoyed going to Grammenos beach – mostly the sandy side where the sea is shallow and warm. Giota has been absolutely wonderful – so kind and she couldn’t have done more for us to make our stay in her lovely suite more comfortable. She is delightful. Janice, our rep, has been very helpful to us as well.
Giota, the owner of Amphitheatre Suites, was exceptionally helpful and looked after us as if we were family. She went above and beyond to make our holiday enjoyable.
What a fabulous location. Aphrodite Suite is so spacious and the roof terrace is an added bonus. Giota has been so friendly and helpful surprising us with treats of tasty marbled cake. Paleochora town comes alive in evening and we have eaten in different resstaurants on most evenings. There is a great cocktail bar where they serve 2-for-1 cocktails and you can enjoy the sunset. Nidri Gorge is not far away and although only 2kms in length it’s is a strenuous climb with some tricky sections.
It was a great pleasure to stay in Calypso. What a wonderful apartment and Giota is the most attentive and generous hostess who has made our week truly special. You will be well looked after. We couldn’t do the Samaria Gorge on this visit, but we were delighted with the Nidri Gorge walk. We walked down first, and then back up to a wonderful meal at the restaurant. Paleochora, we shall return!
A wonderful experience from start to finish. Booking was helped by speaking to someone who knew the property. From then on a superb experience in a great location.
As usual Simpson Travel has added a wonderful villa to their programme. Amphitheatre Suites is top class with great views of Paleochora town and the beach. Giota’s attention to ensuring her guests have a great holiday is second to none. Our second visit to Paleochora and it will not be our last! All the restaurants and local beaches are very good.
We have stayed in many Simpson properties over the last 10 years and Amphitheatre Suites is up with the best of them. Apart from the quality furnishings - nothing is too much trouble for Giota, the owner, and her warmth and friendliness shines through. Paleochora itself is a gem - a wonderful discovery as we had not been to this part of Crete before. We also hired bicycles for a couple of days and as most of the terrain around the town is flat - it was a great way to get around and made us feel more like locals. First visit here but not the last - we will be back.
A spectacular place to celebrate a special birthday and Simpson Travel pulled out all the stops! Giota the owner is a dream and could not do enough for us. Anyone who follows after us will have a fabulous time, whether seeking walking or beach relaxation. Samaria Gorge is of course gorgeous but so is Irini and Amidri. Gramenno beach is an idyllic spot not to be missed. Two weeks in Paleochora are not enough!
What a fantastic place to get away from it all, whether you want to hike a gorge, take a boat trip or simply relax on a beach away from the crowds. Enjoy the friendliness of the local people, being recognised as you frequent the shops and tavernas. Giota, the owner of Amphitheatre Suites will spoil you endlessly and nothing is too much trouble for her. You won’t want to come home.
