  • The ultimate country retreat in the Luberon
  • Private heated swimming pool and spa area
  • Close to Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Part rambling country farmhouse, part sophisticated contemporary villa, La Canorgue is an exceptional home close to Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Nestled in the timeless Luberon landscape of ancient villages, rolling hills and olive groves, this house is ideal for anyone in search of top-notch accommodation in an idyllically private setting.

From the outside, La Canorgue appears pretty much unchanged, with rough whitewashed walls, terracotta roof tiles and louvred shutters. Step inside however and you’ll discover a stunning conversion comprising nine en-suite bedrooms, elegant living spaces and a high-tech home cinema. The transformation from rustic mas to luxury home is one of the finest we’ve come across; all the character of the original rooms has been retained and given a stylish 21st-century twist to create the ultimate country retreat, close to the loveliest towns and villages of the Luberon.

The grounds are equally impressive, comprising six hectares of orchards, olive groves and lavender fields. Tucked within the grounds like a lush inner sanctuary, an enclosed garden shelters a play area and a heated private swimming pool. The pool deck and its adjoining terrace would make a spectacular venue for a private party or special family celebration and, with a games room, boules alley and table tennis, there’s something to keep all ages happily entertained.

The local area

The house is just 2km from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a charming town loved for its antique shops and pretty waterways. Here you’ll find horse riding and tennis courts and, if you’ve packed your walking boots, there are many trails to explore in the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux, 30 minutes away by car. There are also half a dozen picturesque villages within a 20-30km radius, including Gordes, Ménerbes and Roussillon. Avignon, Apt and Orange are all easily accessible as day trips.

The Comtat Venaissin was for centuries a hotly-contested region of Haute Provence, a separate political enclave which surrounded the Principality of Orange and the town of Avignon. For centuries a separate political entity, it came under Papal rule in 1274 and stubbornly resisted annexation by the French throne. Its capital, Carpentras, on the Auzon was in Greek and Roman times a lively market town, and later the favourite haunt of the Avignon popes. It is now famous for its truffle markets. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is built on the islands formed by five branches of the river Sorgue, with lots of waterside restaurants and cafés, as well as several large antique waterwheels, still turning. The town is famous for its numerous antiques dealers and Sunday antiques market.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.
