Charming Haniotena Cottage lies between a tiny white-washed chapel and a carved village spring at the end of a narrow lane in Kritsa. This is one of Crete's oldest and prettiest villages, set on a hillside just a short drive from the sea. Inside the gate you enter a secluded courtyard garden, filled with flowers and herbs: a tangle of jasmine tumbling around elegant irises and earthenware pots filled with fragrant rosemary and oregano. At the far end is a sheltered swimming pool with beautiful views across open countryside towards Almyros Beach.
Inside, aged oak and natural stone are enhanced by traditional furnishings, creating a simple Grecian feel, with touches of cobalt blue in the kitchen adding to the villa’s atmospheric appeal. Upstairs the light and airy bedroom affords wonderful views towards the coast and there is an additional sleeping area on a mezzanine above the living room. There are shops and tavernas within walking distance of the property and the fashionable harbour town of Agios Nikolaos is just a twenty-minute drive away.

This was our third stay at Haniotena Cottage in Kritsa. The cottage is very convenient for local amenities, has beautiful views and a small garden and pool to die for. Simpson staff were superb in every way. In addition the local villagers and tradespeople are very friendly and helpful. Despite having obvious tourist appeal, this village has not been spoilt and manages somehow to blend tourism with a very natural and authentic Cretan experience.
Mrs Mitchell – October 2019
Excellent stay at Haniotena, great for adults who like a quirky place to stay. An amazing view, lovely sunrises. Kostoula and Lydia are an absolute asset to Simpson Travel and a pleasure to meet.
Mark & Rob – September 2019
We could not have chosen a more perfect location for our honeymoon; it was everything we wanted and exceeded all of our expectations – peaceful and private, away from the bustling tourist areas and authentically Greek. The cottage was beautiful, the views stunning, the local people of Kritsa welcoming and friendly and Kostoula, the Simpson representative, went out of her way to make our stay extra special. We relaxed and unwound by the pool but having the car meant we could explore when we wanted to and there is plenty to do and see in the local area. We felt very lucky to have been able to spend time here and were very sad to leave. It really is a little piece of heaven!
Mr & Mrs Stickells – August 2019
Very relaxing and enjoyable two weeks on Kritsa. Visits to local sights – Lato, Panagia Kera, Katharo Plateau – all worthwhile and some spectacular scenery on route. Enjoyed views from the bedroom/sitting area – beautiful colours over the mountains across the bay at sunset. Thank you to Lydia and Kostoula for looking after us.
Margaret & Chris – October 2018
We’ve enjoyed every minute of this holiday – what’s not to like, a quirky cottage, friendly locals and sunny weather! Special thanks to Kostoula and Lydia for all their help and local wisdom. We will be back one day.
Esther & Andy – October 2018
We’ve returned – as we hoped we would! Two weeks in this time. We have been recognised and welcomed back by many of the local people and of course, Lydia has been helpful, friendly and rescued us when we lost the front door key on our trip to Spinalonga. We have eaten out in the village – Aristidis and The Big Tree. Having had a very busy two months prior to coming away, this holiday has been just what we needed – we knew what to expect and weren’t disappointed. We went to see Sonia (owner of the cottage) she was delighted to meet guests from her house in Kritsa. Thank you to Kotstoula (always at the end of the phone when needed!). we’ve had a great holiday, the weather has been fantastic – thank you to everyone involved.
Pete & Penny – September 2018
We had a wonderful holiday, thank you Simpson Travel. Haniotena is a lovely cottage up in the hills with an amazing view – it felt like home the moment we stepped inside. The village was just a few minutes’ walk from our idyllic cottage hideaway and you can buy all the basic amenities you need. The locals are so wonderfully friendly, we felt like one of the villagers by the time we left. The taverna nearest the cottage served amazingly tasty local fish and make their own taramosalata – it was divine.
N & S – August 2018
Had a lovely week here, in this quirky but lovely house. We liked Lato city which is well worth a short drive. St Pantaleimon beach was lovely and the Agadiko taverna had good service and home cooked food. We enjoyed Katharo plateau and especially Katerina’s Taverna.
Chris & Jan – August 2018
I have travelled three times with Simpson Travel and I would not hesitate to recommend the company to anyone. The attention to detail and the trouble-free touches, such as car hire and information prior to travel is spot on. The standard of all the properties is very high and I am sure I will be booking again with Simpson Travel.
Clare – July 2018
Wonderful, relaxing week at the Haniotena cottage. We loved the pool and swam/bobbed in it every day. Visited the mined Dorian city at Lato, just ‘around the corner’. Ventured out to Sitia for a few days drive and lunch. Agios Nikolaos was great fun for a lazy lunch at Palagos as well as leisurely shopping and sightseeing. We have loved this week and especially the charm of Haniotena Cottage. It is looked after beautifully by Lydia, who is very special. Special mention for the swallows and swifts with whom we shared the pool.
Nigel & Frances – July 2018
The cottage has been the perfect ad much needed antidote to a busy year from us both. The frequent dips in the pool have been bliss and we’ve explored out beyond Kritsa a fair bit. We recommend the plateau above and lots nearby, but also a fishing hamlet, Mochlos, at the end of the mountains you can see in the far distance across the bay. Thank you to Kostoula and Lydia for looking after us. Highly recommended – this cottage is a delight!
Glen & Alan – July 2018
Lovely cottage – well kept – pool is a big bonus. Great views from the bedroom feature windows. Kritsa is a beautiful village, all provisions catered for at super market at the bottom of the hill. All in all, a great holiday.
Tony & Liz – June 2018
We had such a great time! We loved the villa and the location. Marian and Elli made us so welcome. We loved the beaches, the food, the people! So many surprises of the good kind like the support at the airport, clean towels and beds during the week. We would 100% book through Simpson Travel again! From booking to getting home everyone made our holiday really, really great. Many, many thanks!
Dr and Mrs Jackson – July 2018
A perfect hideaway for a week and yet so close the village and its life. Perfect weather. The swallows and pipistrelles have been a joy to watch, by day and night over the pool – so difficult to photograph! Many thanks to Simpson Travel for the use of such an unusual cottage.
Mike & Sue – April 2018
This was our first trip with Simpson Travel. We have just flown home and are in the process now of booking for next year we were so pleased. When we expressed a possible concern with the car it was changed the next morning. We have had a very stressful year and this was just what we needed. Everything ran like clockwork and we have come back refreshed and renewed.
Mrs Jenkins – October 2017
Excellent service from the Simpson Travel from booking to arrival at the villa. The villa was beautiful and the website clearly showed the property accurately and gave all the information needed. Welcome pack was very good and help from Evie, the local representative, was easily available and her service attentive to our wishes.
Dr Thomas – October 2017
Loved everything about this wonderful cottage and the village of Kritsa. Such warm and welcoming people who make you feel a part of village life from the outset. We set out to have a week of doing little other than relaxing at the cottage and spending time in the village. It was a perfect combination. We did not ignore the resident puss-cat. We loved having her about and it made us feel very at home to have such an affectionate cat around. We will miss her. We don't know how the Simpson Travel manages to find such wonderful villas/cottages for us to enjoy but very pleased they do. Thanks as ever to all involved in making our holiday a great one.
Laura & Steve – September 2017
Fabulous in so many ways – the cottage, the view, the village, the local people, the village tavernas and bars and the weather. And, as ever, the Simpson Travel service.
Mrs Bishopclark – September 2017
We have had a wonderful week's holiday here. The weather couldn't have been better. As previously mentioned, to have a cottage with wonderful views, but so close to the village is indeed hard to come by – it was such a treat to eat out on a few occasions. The local people are very friendly and eager to 'treat you' with food or a little gift. Thank you to Evie and Lydia for their local knowledge and suggestions. We hope to return next year.
Pete & Perry – September 2017
We too have had wonderful week here. Our itinerary was to be idle for a week and that is what we did entirely. It is perfect for relaxation as to have a house with views but also to have a pretty village/town just outside your door is hard to come by. Special mention of course to Lydia and Evie. If I could I would have taken her home but she does a fab job at keeping the garden safe.
Andrea & Ian – August 2017
We have absolutely loved staying here and will miss all of its charm and tranquillity when we are back in our busy London lives. We really enjoyed meeting the hugely welcoming locals who made it their mission to include us for drinks and chats whenever possible. Lots of relaxing in the pool! Thank you for everything!
Emily & Alex – August 2017
Returning for a second year to the beautiful Haniotena Cottage in Kritsa, we were not disappointed. It is the most beautiful location and so peaceful. The local residents are very friendly and welcoming. We shall hopefully be returning in the future.
Mrs Mitchell – June 2017
We've really enjoyed Haniotena Cottage as a base for exploring East Crete. We spent all of our time on the lovely sunny terrace in the mornings and our room in the evening. We have had terrific weather and a very relaxing time. Kritsa was a perfect host! Great suggestions and recommendations from Evie and Lydia – our thanks to them both. Many thanks for sharing a lovely place to stay.
Rebecca & Graham – May 2017
Stunning property. We had a very relaxing holiday. The cottage is home from home. Views are incredible. The pool and garden only add to the first class experience of genuine, traditional Cretan adventure. Thanks Simpson Travel.
Mr Hosking – August 2016
What at an idyllic two weeks! Breathtaking views over the valley to the sea beyond and mountains in the background. Being within 2-3 minutes of the beautiful mountain village of Kritsa made this cottage even more appealing with shops and tavernas so close and villagers all so friendly... We loved it!
Mrs Rasmussen – July 2016
Our first visit to Crete was delightful and we came across many small villages with kind and welcoming locals (non-English speaking!). Even after two weeks we have barely scratched the surface and our appetite is whetted for a return visit. Crete airport seems the most efficient of all the Greek Islands that we have flown to.
Mrs Elliott – May 2016
Had a brilliant two weeks at Haniotena Cottage. Kritsa is such a lovely, friendly village and we were drawn into village life. Cottage comfortable, garden and pool just lovely, especially the dipping swallows.
Mrs Butler – June 2015
We had a fantastic week. The cottage is comfortable and quirky. We loved the little archways and alcoves downstairs and the airy comfort upstairs. The garden is beautiful – the pool perfect.
Mrs Pugh – June 2015
Haniotena Cottage, in the pretty village of Kritsa, is the quirkiest place we have ever stayed – a great base from which to explore the many delights of Eastern Crete.
Mrs Lynch – September 2014
Our holiday in Crete was the best for years. The service from booking to departure (except for the charter airline and departure check-in) was excellent. The local representative was helpful with many good tips and information. The villa was everything we expected from the website and a little more. We would certainly consider booking another holiday with Simpson Travel in the future. Thank you.
Mr Merry – August 2014
Haniotena Cottage was a delightful holiday home and gave us a real flavour of living in traditional Crete. The village of Kritsa is full of character, lovely people and tavernas serving great food at a very reasonable price. We would love to return next year to experience more of this beautiful part of Crete.
Mr Solomon – June 2014
Beautiful cottage with its own lovely garden and pool to enjoy. Really nice to be in a small village where you can get to know some of the local people to enhance your holiday. Good location to explore nice beaches, tavernas and mountain roads. Crete is a beautiful island full of lovely welcoming people and would certainly come back.
Mrs Payne – July 2013
Excellent agent. A pleasure to deal with, everything was taken care of and everyone I had dealings with were polite and professional. Highly recommended.
Mr Roche-Gordon – April 2013
Spent a lovely relaxing week in this charming place. The cottage is wonderfully welcoming and comfortable. The only problem is...choosing where to sit! Katharo Plateau – away from it all and peaceful. We wish we’d been there in the spring to see the flowers. Thank you Lynne and Lydia.
Mrs Brooks – October 2012
The accommodation and location of our holiday is unique, very enjoyable holiday.
Mr Unsworth – September 2012
We had an idyllic time in the cottage doing very little apart from enjoying the pool, the scenery, the village, the sunshine and the food. It was just what we needed. Thank you. We have had a lovely week.
Miss Currie – August 2012
Our choice of Greek properties is as diverse as the islands themselves, ranging from simple seaside charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal. To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.
* For further clarification on Facilities and Amenities, please view the 'Details' tab for each property or speak to one of our experienced sales consultants.
The road from north to south Crete takes you on an inspiring journey from the exclusivity of Elounda and the elegance of lakeside Agios Nikolaos into a rugged landscape harbouring the soul food of a simpler life. From gorges and caves to the mountain communities of the beautiful Lasithi Plateau – and then on to the romantically unspoilt beaches and homely tavernas of Myrtos, Makrigialos and Ferma in the south – this is Crete at its most warmly welcoming, without artifice, where you’re a guest and never a tourist.
