Arosmari Village Hotel is a haven; a cluster of stone and cypress wood cottages with a beautiful garden at its heart, set in the timeless village of Vamos. Here, among roses, jasmine and lavender are many secret corners to read, meditate or sleep the afternoon away. Touches of the rural past: a shepherd's hut, a threshing circle and even a small chapel are spread among the olive trees and lawn. A leisurely day begins with breakfast served in the gardens, using local produce and later, light lunches can be served by the pool. There is a delightful reading room with an honesty bar with open views over the pool and garden plus a cosy sitting room with old photographs and memorabilia. An extra dimension is a small Spa for guests including a Turkish Hammam and treatment room for a combination of traditional massages and therapies with scented oils.

Arosmari is a small country hotel for adults and couples only. Our Simpson concierge service will advise on local walks, driving routes and cultural activities including cookery and wine-tasting. In addition, host and pianist Nikos arranges classic Greek music evenings throughout the summer in the small amphitheatre in the gardens of Arosmari, complete with local wines and a delicious traditional supper.

The village of Vamos is set against the spectacular backdrop of the White Mountains. Shepherds still herd their sheep along the flag-stoned lanes and russet-haired goats amble between the olives. Vamos is a small slice of old Crete infused with the values of traditional hospitality. The village is famous for its local crafts and organic produce: including thyme honey, pickles, jams, cheeses and olive oil soap. It also has a local bakery, a 19th century kafenion and traditional tavernas where mouth-watering Cretan specialities, such as chicken in red wine, cuttlefish and fennel, artichokes or chickpea purée are cooked in stone ovens and served with some of the island's best wine. In low season, log fires create a wonderful evening atmosphere and in summer, large plane trees provide welcome shade. For those who want to explore authentic Cretan food a little further, local cookery courses are available. The village is also the starting point for walking tours of the surrounding countryside and historic Chania town is just a 30 minute drive.

Customer feedback

Arosmari is a very special place with the care from Niko, Susan and Ruby making you feel like guests in their home. The village is very real and authentic with excellent Cretan food at very reasonable prices. The village offers excellent walks and allows you to see into the lives of local shepherds, beekeepers etc. Fabulous cooking courses too. Just go, you won't regret it.
Mr & Mrs Johnson  October 2017

This is the 4th year we have been to Armosmari in Vamos and absolutely love it. We get there and feel instantly relaxed, the atmosphere you have created is magical. Please don't change a thing!
Mrs Wood October 2017

A last minute decision, so a brief visit. Our first time in Crete, weather mixed but some lovely days. Sue was lovely and really attentive giving us helpful tips, what to see etc. Highlight of our stay was a trip over the mountain to the coast, all very dramatic and beautiful. Rosemary Cottage was really comfortable and suited very well. Many thanks, we will be back !!!
Mr & Mrs Bell October 2017

Such a delightful home that is hard to leave. We shall miss the gardens, the views, the delicious breakfasts (thank you Ruby) the great choices of tavernas, the air & tranquility and of course the wonderful team who have made everything so easy.
Lesley & Derek – October 2017

We have just had the best week. The hotel was delightful. Beautiful gardens with the stunning backdrop of the white mountains. Susan and Derek the reps at the hotel could not be more helpful and friendly without being intrusive. Delicious breakfasts provided by Ruby. We really did not want to leave and we are seriously considering a return visit which we rarely do. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.
Mrs Murphy – October 2017

The Simpson experience is far superior to other agents that we have used. Their attention to detail is second to none and most importantly the customer's satisfaction is always considered.
Mr Thacker – October 2017

Arosmari is a delightful and authentic Greek experience. The cottages are simple and very comfortable with beautiful views of the White Mountains. Breakfast was delicious and the local village tavernas served some very tasty traditional Greek food. A lovely place to holiday
Mrs Knox October 2017

We loved mint cottage ; the pool was great for "proper" swimming; Ruby's breakfast are superb with such a lovely variety of local produce and wonderful poached eggs! Without exception, all staff are fantastic! Sue & Derek are so knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. Really appreciated the regular linen change & daily clean. Highly recommend the music evenings onsite. Very pleased to have found Simpsons and we hope to be returning customers.
Ed & Liz – October 2017

Another visit to Paradise. Our second visit to Arosmari but first to Thyme Cottage - we just love it here, everything about it especially about the staff. Susan, Derek, Kikos, Ruby and everybody - just delightful. we have done some magnificent walks in and around Vamos and Almyrida. We really love it all and will return next year. Thank you all so much, a wonderful week.
Jill & Tim – September 2017

Our second visit to Arosmari and just as enjoyable. The staff here are brilliant and Derek and Sue have been marvelous. We don't often go back to places we have been before but think this may be an exception.
Jeff & Dorothy – September 2017

We returned for another week of Paradise at Arosmari and it has all flown by far too quickly. We are so grateful for Sue & Derek; so welcome and hospitable throughout the week; for Ruby's magnificent breakfast and the wonderful spread she put on for Costas and Nikos marvelous concert; for the consummate musicianship, enjoyment and entertainment that the ensemble gave us and what a great venue - how many other people have an amphitheater in their garden. For the pool, the staff and all the lovely gusts who have made out stay so special.
Sarah & Perry – September 2017

Steve and I have had a really amazing week in Mint cottage. We have loved everything about the beautiful area around Vamos and retrieved memories from 20 years ago when we were lost here. Agree with previous comments about the wonderful restaurants on our doorstep. Thank you Sue and Derek, Ruby, Nikos and all of the team. Simpson holidays are a real favorite of ours.
Steve & Dee – September 2017

We have just enjoyed a fabulous fortnight here with wall to wall sunshine every day. Arosmari Village Hotel is a little paradise in Greece, and we have been looked after very well by Susan, Derek & Ruby. The breakfasts were phenomenal. The concerts held in our amphitheater were truly memorable - as was Ruby's gastronomic treats served afterwards. We will be back!
Roger & Sue – September 2017

Once again an excellent service was provided from booking, representatives at the resort, car service. The accommodation was of a high standard as per the description in the brochure. The region, Vamos in Crete, was perfect for that quite and relaxing get away, which was much needed. Both my husband and I are very impressed with the service offered by Simpson Travel and would and have recommended to friends and family.
Mr Hurst – September 2017

We've really enjoyed our stay at Arosmari. The location is an excellent base for excursions to surrounding beaches and the mountains. Derek and Susan have been so welcoming and willing to share their extensive knowledge of the island.
Mrs Davies – September 2017

There is one outstanding feature about Arosmari Village and of course the delightful Fennel Cottage and that is Nico's dedication to creating a haven of natural beauty and tranquility in his village, which has finally prised tourists off the coast. His dedication to music and the exceptional concert held in the amphitheater where he and a friend performed, was further testimony to him ensuring his village to thrive in difficult economic times. Fennel Cottage gardens and the entire Arosmari complex is a fantastic and welcome refuge. Thank you to the brilliant team Sue,Derek,Ruby and Nicos for making it all possible.
The Shepherd Family – September 2017

We have had the most wonderful and relaxing holiday at Mint cottage. Derek & Susan have been so helpful and knowledgeable as have the whole Arosmari team! Thank you to everyone!
Jen & Leighton – August 2017

Another lovely Simpson holiday! Arosmari is a place of peace and tranquility, great stress reliever! Crete has some beautiful places to visit. We have had some great music nights, if you get the chance the "Vamos Ensemble" is an excellent performance as are the many local musical evenings. Our hosts Susan and Derek have been super - So much knowledge of the area. Thank you - We will return!
Sam & Gary – August 2017

Arosmari is like taking a step back in time , beautiful sleepy hillside village with other destinations close by should you feel the need to travel further afield. From the moment we arrived it was a lovely experience, beautiful location, character properties, super reps in Susan and Derek, combined with fabulous breakfasts and a lovely pool and garden area, we could not have asked for more .another lovely Simpsons holiday, total rest and relaxation. Thank you.
Mrs Dodwell – August 2017

Very satisfied with the holiday, due to the attention to detail one would expect from Simpson Travel.
Mrs Arnull – August 2017

Really super holiday, the location was excellent, facilities and staff top class! Susan and Derek were great.
Mr Skinner – August 2017

Relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Susan and Derek couldn't have been more helpful.
Phil & Carol – July 2017

We were very grateful for all the comments made in this book and heartily agree with all the positive ones, of which there were so many. Susan and Derek made everyone feel welcome and special, Ruby prepares an excellent breakfast and Stelios is a wonderful masseuse. If you are lucky enough to be here when the Vamos ensemble(orchestrated by Nikos) gives a concert, do go! Unbelievably high standard and a marvelous evening. As ever, with Simpson it was a delightful holiday.
Joanna & Bruce – July 2017

Everything was great - accommodation; staff; Simpson reps (Derek & Susan); access to local tavernas; proximity to local sites of interest. Shame that we could only stay a week.
Mrs Flynn – July 2017

An excellent site with access to both historical and relaxing environments.
Mr Parmley – July 2017

Arosmari is a beautiful place to stay, with lovely gardens an excellent pool. quiet, comfortable and it's all beautifully presented - we would stay there again
Mr Clark – July 2017

Our holiday in Arosmari was a wonderful relaxing break. The reps and staff ensured we had everything we needed and we really appreciated the extra touches - home-baked biscuits, wine, flowers, candles etc. I would recommend this holiday to anyone.
Mrs Crosby – July 2017

A restful, tranquil hotel but one that doesn't feel like a hotel. Beautiful grounds and buildings with a gorgeous swimming pool. Excellent breakfasts served in an informal and enchanting setting. Most of all, Sue and Derek could not be more welcoming, friendly and helpful - always making time to advise or just chat - yet never being intrusive. A great place for a relaxing break.
Mr Andrews – July 2017

Simpson Travel gave us a wonderful holiday to look forward to and look back on
Mrs Carter – July 2017

This was my first Simpson Travel holiday with my two adult children but also a first visit to Crete. Vamos is a lovely town with great walks of varying lengths. Everyone was extremely welcoming and our rep Susan was a constant source of knowledge. Our house was very comfortable; the pool clean and inviting and the breakfasts never ending! There was a fantastic music night and buffet provided by the owner Nicos. We had some fantastic meals at the Parasia restaurant a short walk away. There are plenty of places to visit but the heatwave did restrict us so we shall have to return in the future!
Caroline, James & Amy – July 2017

Thoroughly enjoyed the break - Susan was excellent in giving information. The concert on the last night was magical.
Mrs Elliot-Rodwell – July 2017

My friend and I have truly loved our time at Arosmari. This entire property and the facilities are such a charming combination of ancient and newly built. If we ever have the opportunity, we will come back again.
Dr Carson – September 2016

This is what I call a retreat! Away from it all and very relaxing. The weather has been superb and everybody has been so helpful, i.e. Susan, Mike and Nicos. We recommend a visit to Kalives which is not far and is quite unspoiled; also to Chania. We have not missed televisions, but we have watched quite a few DVDs which we never have time for at home. We will go home refreshed, relaxed and with some lovely memories
Mr Jones – September 2016

Relaxing week in rustic surroundings. Excellent food and company. We were part of the first ‘Stretch in the sun’ programme, which was challenging, entertaining and useful. Taverna Chasomari is not only the nearest, but best for food and entertainment. Perhaps next time we would be more adventurous, could explore surrounding region, but it’s very easy just to laze by the pool! Tip: We did not realise until penultimate day that we had a terrace/balcony (steps up from courtyard) with spectacular views of the mountains. Thanks to Susan, Mike, Ruby and staff – they were all helpful, available and cheerful. The breakfast was excellent!
Mr Syers – September 2016

Our second visit to Arosmari, this time staying at the beautiful Rosemary Cottage, felt less like an organised trip and more like a visit to see old friends. Nikos, Susan, Mike, Ruby, Kostas (if you can get over his opinions of the English football team!) and Clairi are just all such lovely people, so welcoming, friendly and were totally attentive to our needs - nothing was ever too much trouble (thanks for the gaffer tape, Mike - I'll bring you some more when we return!). Arosmari itself is just so magical - the peace and tranquility of the gardens, the beautiful candlelight's that greeted us when we returned each evening, already mellow, from another night out in one of the lovely local tavernas, the musical concert provided in the little amphitheater by Nikos and his little band under the fading sunset, all were just incomparable and make this a very special place. It would have been so easy to linger for another week...and another....! Thanks, too, to all the Simpson team in London who provided faultless service and organisation - you really are a very special company.
Mr Shaw – September 2016

The most idyllic place we have ever encountered. The staff Susan and Mike, Ruby and all the team including Nikos made it such a memorable stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the concert on Friday and the food organised by Ruby was superb! Altogether what a fabulous place to stay! We will definitely be back! Thank you all so much!
Mr Thacker – September 2016

If you are looking for a perfect relaxing retreat with great staff, great food, clean beautiful cottages look no further!
Mrs Neigel – September 2016

Yet again a super time at Arosmari. Gorgeous weather for the whole two weeks. We recommend a trip to Kissamos – not so much to see the town, but the museum is a must. Aptera on the way back. Be warned that it closes at 3 pm. We are going home refreshed and relaxed. Thanks to Nicos, Mike and Susan, and Ruby for her yummy food. You are a great team!
Mrs Wood – September 2016

If you are looking for personal service, with accommodation that has been well tried and tested and is off the beaten track then Simpsons can certainly meet your needs.
Mrs Perkins – August 2016

We were delighted when we arrived at Arosmari & Fennel Cottage - a wonderful setting and well catered for. Vamos is a very friendly, welcoming village. Our thanks to all those involved in making this a special holiday destination. Booked on a whim when UK was grey and cold in late June. Not a bad choice!
Mr Milam – August 2016

We spent a lovely relaxing week at Arosmari. Just what we needed. Plenty to do when we wanted, otherwise an oasis of calm to relax and read in the sun. Thanks to Sue and Mike and the lovely team for making us feel so welcome. I'm sure we'll return.
Ms Griffiths – August 2016

A big thank you to Susan, Mike, Ruby and the rest of the hotel staff for a lovely week in Vamos. The hotel is enchanting and exceeded our expectations for being the perfect place for rest and relaxation.
Mr Jordan – August 2016

Location, property, reps, owner and staff are brilliant. Nothing is too much trouble, so friendly and welcoming which extends to the people of Vamos. Such a relaxing holiday, such an ideal setting for couples who want to get away from it all but if you wish to explore, either by walking locally or driving to places of interest, the seaside or Rethymnon and Chania, it is your choice. The highlight of the holiday was a delicious Cretan buffet prepared by the owner's mother and 'Ruby' a member of staff, and then whisked away to Lake Kournas to witness an open air concert performed by an exceptional orchestra and singer on the night of the full moon, sitting centrally in the 2nd row, all organised by the owner of the properties for his several guests. We shall definitely travel with Simpsons in the future. Thank you for making our holiday one to remember.
Ms Page – August 2016

What a fabulous little bolt-hole retreat! We've had a bit of a tough year and needed the peace and serenity provided by Basil (Arosmari, Vamos). We loved it. Special thanks has to go to all of the Simpson team here at Arosmari. The biggest thank you!
Mr Reardon – August 2016

Shhhh Everything had been considered. Simply relaxed on our holiday.
Mr Thomas – August 2016

Exactly what we needed! Perfect location, lovely staff & delicious food...we'll be back!
Mrs Williams – August 2016

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time on the island of Crete! Wonderful beaches, friendly people, great food and a charming cottage with beautiful gardens. The peaceful and laid back tranquility of Vamos really rubbed off on us and we returned home very relaxed.
Mr Swan – August 2016

Charmed by our first Cretan adventure at every turn.
Mr Thomas – August 2016

We have just had the most fabulous, relaxing week. Thank you Nikos, Sue, Mike & Ruby - the eggs are the best! We will be back there as there is so much more to do & see. The musical evening on Friday was one of the highlights of the week, the food, music & company was excellent.
Mrs Sims – August 2016

Full details

Enjoying a prime location above the gardens and pool area and with stunning views of the White Mountains, Arugula is the largest of the Arosmari Village Hotel cottages. Nikos, the owner, has used his understanding of local architecture and access to traditional craftsmen and artisans to create a cottage that exudes charm and sits comfortably with its restored neighbours. The ground floor boasts a good sized kitchen and a full dining room accessed through a traditional arch. Another clever feature is that the two bedrooms with en-suite facilities are on the ground floor, taking full advantage of the cooler location.  Upstairs the spacious living area has a traditional wood beamed ceiling, open fireplace and access to a lovely terrace with plenty of space for dining and relaxing. The gardens, swimming pool and hotel facilities are accessed from Arugula by a series of steps.
