This stunning contemporary villa makes quite a style statement in the quiet residential area between Bidart and Biarritz, with moon-white walls and angular shapes softened by the mature trees that frame the garden. Designed by renowned Biarritz architect Delphine Carrère, Villa Paradis is immaculate both inside and out, finished with a professional eye for detail that makes a stay here feel delightfully indulgent. Yet for all the designer glamour, this is a wonderful family holiday home, ideal for a multi-generation gathering or two families travelling together and just 500 metres from the vast sandy expanse of 100 Marches beach.

Most of the ground floor rooms open onto the garden, which is fully enclosed and play-friendly, with lots of grassy space to run around. There’s a 15-metre pool which allows for a respectable amount of exercise should you feel inclined, plus shady outdoor dining and lounging spaces for those who just want to take it easy. The upper floor gives you just enough height for a glimpse of the ocean, with a balcony or terrace for each of the four bedrooms and sea views perfectly framed in the master bedroom’s vast picture window. With the beach, the bakery and a choice of restaurants within walking distance, Villa Paradis is a very elegant yet easy-going choice for a Basque country beach holiday.

The local area

Less than a kilometre from both Biarritz and Bidart, Villa Paradis caters for virtually every holiday need within walking distance or a short drive. Bidart is a sleepy seaside village set on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic at the highest point on this coastline, with a good range of restaurants, local shops and a weekly Saturday market. Neighbouring Guéthary is similarly charming, with red-roofed whitewashed houses clustered around a traditional fishing port. You’ll find life-guards, surf hire and tuition at virtually all the local beaches: the Plage du Centre also has volleyball and boules courts, while the Plage de l'Uhabia has summer activities for children. Stunning coastal walks connect from Bidart through Guéthary and St-Jean-de-Luz, and as far as Hendaye on the Spanish border. Drinks, dinner and sunset from one of Bidart or Guéthary’s sea-view restaurants is a holiday highlight.

Biarritz lies within very easy reach. With its grand architecture, boutique shops, wonderful beaches and famous covered market, this vibrant yet family-friendly seaside town has a character all of its own. For golfers, the Biarritz pass is a sensible investment, giving access to Arcangues, Bayonne, Biarritz, Ilbarritz, Moliets and Seignosse courses.

Days out

St-Jean-de-Luz is arguably the most appealing town in the area. A fishing-port-turned-holiday-town, St-Jean is known as the gourmet centre for Basque cuisine, with a rich cultural calendar, stylish shops and lovely beaches. A day tour of the Basque villages such as Ascain, Ainhoa, Sare and Espelette makes for a pleasing contrast to the coast; for something different again, don’t miss a trip into Spain and the old town of Hondarrabia or the celebrated cities of San Sebastian, Pamplona and Bilbao, home to the famous Guggenheim museum. Hendaye beach beckons with all manner of watersports and a thalassotherapy spa. For a more typically Basque experience, take a wander around the old town to sample pintxos or perhaps catch a lively game of pelota. Bayonne, capital of the Pays Basque, sits quietly under the tourist radar but rewards visitors with narrow medieval streets and a fine Gothic cathedral, not to mention of course its eponymous jambon. Some of southern Europe’s most majestic mountains are accessible in the Pyrénées National Park.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
