  • Close to Bidart and Biarritz

Inspired by the style of nearby Biarritz and the attention to detail of Bidart, your closest village, Villa Panoramique is far more than just a place to stay. With views that take in the rolling Basque countryside and distant peaks of the Pyrénées, it allows you to make the most of this enviable location. You can happily spend all day relaxing on the terrace by the large pool, admiring the glorious vista and feeling thoroughly spoiled by the creativity and comforts of its statement interiors.

With four bedrooms and four bathrooms, it’s a spacious choice for families with an attic room that’s ideal for older children who would enjoy a bit of privacy from the rest of the family. The other bedrooms are on the lower ground floor and open out onto the pool terrace, while the main living area opens onto a broad upper balcony with gloriously sunny dining and seating areas. There’s also a sauna and a fully fitted gourmet kitchen and barbecue so you can make the most of Biarritz’s excellent food hall.

The local area

With its half timber-framed houses, Bidart is a quintessential Basque village: a place to catch a high-octane game of pelote Basque, enjoy a morning coffee in a traditional bar on the square or take a walk along the dramatic coastline. It comes with a choice of beaches too, the best-known being Ilbarritz, which is surrounded by a picturesque golf course. The world-famous surfing beach, Parlementia, is also close by and on the other side of that is Guéthary, the place to enjoy a sophisticated sunset drink in the terrace restaurants overlooking the sea.

Biarritz is your glamorous neighbour, just over 10 minutes away, with plenty of tempting dining, shopping and cultural opportunities, alongside its thriving beach and surf scene. Older children will also enjoy the treetop adventure park in adjoining Anglet, a more touristy area but with a number of surfer-friendly beaches, the teen-friendly focal point being buzzy Chambre d’Amour.

Days out

They may be cut from the same cloth as pristine Bidart, but each of the Basque villages has a different story to tell and you’re perfectly positioned to explore them. Ainhoa and Sare are officially two of France’s ‘most beautiful villages’ and the latter is also near the station where you can catch the little train up to the top of La Rhune, the highest peak in the western Pyrénées, for some spectacular views. And should you fancy a day away from the beaches, this is also horse riding, mountain biking, rafting and hiking country.

The 'chocolate capital' of France, Bayonne, is just 20 minutes away by road. Go for the museums and galleries, the upmarket shopping and the spectacular interiors of its twin-spired cathedral – or take in the atmosphere of the country’s largest festival, which descends upon the city in July.

St-Jean-de-Luz is also around 20 minutes away and offers every possible family-friendly attraction along its expanse of golden sand – and because it’s behind a breakwater, it’s a place to escape the waves. Children’s clubs, cafés and restaurants make it the easy parenting option, and the historic town behind lays on all the boutiques, bars and restaurants you could wish for with a flourish.

Being so close to Spain, it would be a shame not to visit and San Sebastián is just a 40-minute drive away with its award-winning pintxos bars, fascinating Old Town and Art Nouveau flair. If you’re there in September you can also enjoy the glitz of the annual international film festival.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
