Holidays will be different this summer. Find out how travel is changing and what we are doing to keep you safe here

NEW FOR 2020

One of the Basque Country’s most seductive qualities is the sense of timelessness; drive a kilometre or two away from the coast and you’ll find landscapes that have changed little in hundreds of years. Life moves on however, and some of the old houses have been reborn as holiday homes such as Villa Mendi, a delightful and traditional country retreat.

Cocooned in 1.3 hectares of private wooded parkland, this authentic Basque Country house has bags of charm, from the colourful poolside tiling to the galleried living space that lets light flood in from all around. With its elegant furnishings, Farrow & Ball palette and terracotta floors worn smooth with age, Villa Mendi looks for all the world like an interiors magazine spread, yet feels warmly welcoming for a family gathering. The sunny living room is full of squashy sofas for grown-up chat, while outside, your younger ones have almost limitless space to play, with a pool alarm for extra peace of mind. The grounds are a delight, with mature trees framing mountain views and lots of sunny spots to sit and contemplate them. For maximum flexibility, all of the five en suite bedrooms can be configured as twins or doubles, perfect for a group of friends or a family party.

Located in a sought-after residential area, Villa Mendi feels blissfully remote, though the views from the first floor balcony remind you that beaches and charming villages lie just a couple of kilometres away. Better yet, it’s less than 15-minutes' walk to not one but two Michelin-starred restaurants, putting you at the heart of everything this delightful region has to offer.

The local area

For shopping, beach days and eating out, you’ll find everything you need within a few kilometres of Villa Mendi, a spot that’s favoured over busier Biarritz by those in the know. A six-minute drive brings you to Bidart’s best beaches: the Plage du Centre and Uhabia, plus local shops and a handful of restaurants around the pretty village square. Guéthary village is the other real character close by; a ten-minute bike ride brings you to its restaurants, bars and small shops, and there’s also a train station here if you feel like exploring more without the car. The line runs along the coast, making it a convenient way to visit places like St Jean de Luz, famous for its sweep of golden sand and celebrated thalassotherapy spas. Biarritz, with its unique surf scene and fin-de-siècle charm, is a 15-minute drive.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
