  • Beautiful mill-house conversion
  • Stylish and contemporary
  • Large gardens bordered by woodland
  • Separate two-bedroom annexe
  • Gentle stroll to village

With timber decking, floor-to-ceiling glass and exposed interior stone work, this attractive mill-house conversion draws on a quirky mix of contemporary styles to create a very comfortable holiday home for a larger group or two families. The villa has five bedrooms spread over the main house and a separate annexe with direct access to the pool, ideal for older teens or just as extra chill out space so as everyone gets to enjoy their holiday time in their own way.

Key to the appeal here is the location: Villa Erreka is very private, set in its own large gardens that border onto woodland to the rear of the house, yet the centre of Ahetze village is just five minutes’ walk for an evening pizza or the morning chocolatines. With mature trees for shade and plenty of grassy space to play, the gardens are a treat for younger guests, but as a former working mill, water is a feature of the property and grounds, so little ones do need to be supervised. Older children love being able to wander into the village square in Ahetze, and surfers of any age will appreciate Bidart's beach, waves and restaurants just a ten-minute drive away.

The local area

Ahetze is a pretty little village which hosts a lively second-hand market (brocante) on the third Sunday of every month. You can also do your basic daily shopping here, with a wider choice of places to shop and eat in Bidart (six kilometres) and Biarritz (ten kilometres). Cliff-top Bidart is full of Basque character, complete with a pelota court and a tiny chapel perched high above the dramatic coastline. The Atlantic waves bring both amateurs and competition-level surfers here, but if you don’t feel like getting wet, the coastal path is one of the most spectacular anywhere in France. Keen golfers should invest in a Biarritz golf pass, which gives access to Arcangues, Bayonne, Biarritz, Ilbarritz, Moliets and Seignosse courses. Nearby is ocean-side Ilbarritz regarded as one of the most beautiful nine-hole courses in France.

Days Out

St Jean de Luz z is arguably the most appealing town in the area. A fishing-port-turned-holiday-town, St-Jean is known as the gourmet centre for Basque cuisine, with a rich cultural calendar, stylish shops and lovely beaches. A day tour of the Basque villages such as Ascain, Ainhoa, Sare and Espelette makes for a pleasing contrast to the coast. For something different again, don’t miss a trip into Spain and the little village of Hondarrabia or the more celebrated cities of San Sebastian, Pamplona and the Guggenheim collection. Bayonne, capital of the Pays Basque, sits quietly under the tourist radar but rewards visitors with narrow medieval streets and a fine Gothic cathedral, not to mention of course its eponymous jambon. Some of southern Europe’s most majestic mountains are accessible in the Pyrénées National Park, whilst the grandeur and lively surf-chic of Biarritz make for a unique atmosphere, whether you’re braving the waves or just enjoying the spectacle from the cafes and restaurants along the shore.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
