This grand Basque home is quite simply one of the best conversions we’ve ever seen, skilfully retaining masses of authentic period charm whilst raising the comfort levels to 21st-century luxury. Villa Azkaine is owned by the family behind Goicoechea pottery, a renowned Basque firm whose elegant designs can be seen throughout the house. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet informal, and a stay here feels like having a beautiful boutique hotel all to yourselves, complete with a cinema room and a private, heated swimming pool. To enhance the hotel-style experience, a comprehensive private concierge service is available by arrangement, and guests enjoy specially reduced rates at the Sofitel pool, gym and spa in Biarritz.

As befits the home of a celebrated local family, Villa Azkaine is ideally situated, set within extensive grounds with sweeping views of La Rhune, a sacred Pyrenean peak that holds an important place in Basque culture. The location on the edge of delightful Ascain village means it’s just a short stroll for your daily baguettes or evening restaurant meal, while the charming port of St-Jean-de-Luz is a mere 15-minute drive. For a family celebration, luxury girls’ getaway or an indulgent break with friends, Villa Azkaine provides a magnificently memorable setting.

The local area

Ascain village is well served with local shops and a handful of restaurants, and charmingly photogenic with its traditional timbered buildings and pretty central square. On summer evenings you can watch pelota being played in the outdoor fronton (court), or make the short drive into St-Jean-de-Luz to sample pintxos: delicious Basque tapas. A fishing-port-turned-holiday-town, St-Jean is known as the gourmet centre for Basque cuisine, with a rich cultural calendar, stylish shops and lovely beaches.

Days Out

Ascain is an ideal base for exploring the western Pyrénées – a favourite with walkers, cyclists and horse-trekkers. Younger children love Le Petit Train funicular which trundles up to the 900-metre high peak of La Rhune, or you can also make the trip on foot; either way the panoramas from the summit are inspiring. For beach days, you can take your pick of beautiful sandy stretches all the way from Hendaye at the Spanish border along the Côte Basque to Anglet.

Biarritz beckons with its grand architecture, boutique shops and famous covered market, a vibrant yet family friendly seaside town that has a character all of its own. Golfers are well catered for too, with Chantaco and Nivelle, 10 minutes’ drive away. Jose-Maria Olazabal’s course is just over the Spanish border at Hondarrabia, with more celebrated Spanish sights including San Sebastian, Pamplona and the Guggenheim collection all do-able as day trips. And if days in the car or hours on the course have left you a little stiff and sore, treat yourself to a relaxing thermal spa at many of the region’s fresh and saltwater centres, including Hendaye, St-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
