NEW FOR 2020

The Ocean House occupies a spectacular cliff top location, with Atlantic rollers foaming onto the beach below and uninterrupted views that stretch for miles along the coast towards the western Pyrenees in one direction, and iconic Biarritz in the other. The outlook is hypnotic and ever-changing, most impressive at the end of the day when the entire 180-degree panorama is gilded by the setting sun.

Given the elevated location you might not expect much of a garden, but there’s a generous 1000m2 of flat, lawned grounds, giving plenty of private space for energetic play, lazy lounging and perhaps an evening grilling the catch of the day on the plancha, with glorious sunset views as your backdrop. Inside, the house is bright and contemporary, with multiple French doors and glass balconies flooding the rooms with pure southern light.

The Ocean House is located to the south of town, a ten-minute walk to Cote des Basques beach and 15 minutes on foot to the centre of Biarritz. The position makes it ideal for a family with teenagers who can access everything they wish to under their own steam, or friends looking to make the most of the dining and surfing possibilities. Properties with this coveted ‘front row’ outlook are rarely available to rent in Biarritz, as most have been in the same family hands for generations, so the chance to spend a week or two here comes highly recommended.

The local area

Biarritz is one of France’s most appealing seaside towns, combining Belle Époque architecture with boutique shopping and some of the most celebrated beaches in the country. The Ocean House sits in the desirable Beaurivage quarter, a kilometre from the Old Town and equidistant between Plage de la Cote des Basques and Plage Marbella. Both are around a ten-minute walk (750m), though it’s a steep walk back up from the Cote des Basques. For food shopping you can keep it very local, with a greengrocer, fishmonger, cheese shop, bakery and other general stores all within a five-minute walk. Alternatively, head for the historic covered market in the Old Town, and be seduced by the heavenly mix of scents and flavours that sum up this proudly foodie region. From family bistros to fine dining, you’ll never be more than a few hundred metres from a restaurant and the experience will rarely disappoint. For a romantic pre- or post-dinner stroll, we recommend the dramatic Rocher de la Vièrge walkway at the Vieux Port, or take an evening wander through the Old Town, recently reborn as Biarritz’s vibrant social and dining hub. If you’d like to get a little deeper under the skin of the area, there are walking tours offered by local residents to give an insider view on all the many things to see and do here.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Steeped in Basque traditions as old as the hills, this destination reflects a very different take on ‘Frenchness’: one that’s also imbued with the colours of Spain just a short drive away. And if swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sandy beaches don’t appeal, you can try a thalassotherapy spa session, watch an adrenaline-fuelled game of Basque pelote or flex your cultural muscle along the narrow streets of ancient towns and pristine villages where museums, galleries and restaurants are in plentiful supply.
