With views that could have been painted by a master (and a rooftop terrace to appreciate them in 360-degree splendour), the 12th-century Villa d'Annunzio in Umbria is a luxurious departure from normality. Described by previous guests as both ‘amazing’ and ‘outstanding’, the contemporary style, history and spectacular location combine to unforgettable effect.

Overlooking the city of Todi and with Spoleto, Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi all less than an hour away, you can get to know a quieter, gentler part of Italy, a side-step from busier Tuscany. However, before you go exploring, there’s much to love about staying home – and it’s the wonderful setting that will captivate you first: extensive green parkland for shaded walks amongst the pines and a beautiful garden recreating the essence of 19th-century design, complete with antique roses for extra romance. The swimming pool, designed to blend in with the natural environment, is on the edge of an ancient olive grove and takes full advantage of those incredible views, along with a choice of outside seating areas so there’s always somewhere just for you.

With its own chapel in the grounds, this unique accommodation could be the perfect small wedding venue, but it’s also ideal for several families or couples holidaying together. History is showcased in every spacious room, through the terracotta-tiled floors, wooden-beamed ceilings, stone fireplaces and antique doors. However, the interior designer had fun here too, bold colours and striking, handpicked furniture reflecting a flair for the dramatic, unusual and exciting, as well as a fondness for good taste and contemporary design.

In addition to a covered dining area outside, there’s a communal dining room inside too and a quirky sitting room that encapsulates the villa’s eclectic style. On the second floor are two suites, Red and White, each with two en-suite double bedrooms, although the latter also has a cosy reading room with the space for a single bed if you want it. On the third and fourth floors are two self-contained apartments, with wonderful views and their own living room, kitchen and two en-suite bedrooms, the bathrooms equipped with a spa bath and hydromassage shower. To make life easier, the owners have also installed a lift to all floors.

For a delicious indulgence that makes your holiday even more relaxing, meals can also be provided, including breakfast for €15 per person and lunches and dinners tailored to your specific requirements for an average price of €50 per person, based on six people or more, excluding drinks. Groups of less than six can also be catered for and a quote provided on request. All meals are paid for locally.

However, getting out and about in the local area won’t disappoint and excellent dining options are plentiful in the pretty hilltop towns nearby, such as elegant Todi about a 20-minute drive away - but it’s the magnificent churches and cathedrals that make this area so memorable. Orvieto’s fabulous Gothic Duomo and the luminous Basilica di San Francesco, one of Assisi’s UNESCO-listed buildings, are two of the finest, both about an hour away by car.

About equidistance (around 45 minutes by road) you’ll find photogenic Spoleto, dominated by its medieval fortress, and Umbria’s capital, Perugia, home to one of Italy’s most impressive Gothic palaces, the Palazzo dei Priori, which houses the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, an excellent art collection.

Olive groves and vineyards, forests and flowers – there’s much to love about the abundant natural beauty of Umbria, and plenty of walking trails to help you explore it. The two most high-profile towns, Assisi and Perugia, have spiritual and cultural gravitas in equal measures, the former the erstwhile home of St Francis, who built his famous monastery there. And after a day of contemplation, in churches, galleries, museums and nature, the ‘green heart of Italy‘ will reward you with a generous feast and a glass or two of its famous wine.
