The road from Heraklion in central Crete to Sitia in the east is a good one, promising some inspiring views along the way. But as you exit the main thoroughfare and descend towards Mochlos there’s an exhilarating sense of freedom as you leave the well-trodden path behind. Tucked away down by the water’s edge, this pretty village may not be widely publicised but those in the know return again and again to enjoy its tantalising blend of old-school charm and first-class hospitality.
On the way into the village, in a magnificent seafront setting, Melitina and neighbouring Kalloni are without question the finest properties in our Crete portfolio. Luxurious and sophisticated, they can be booked independently or alternatively, they present a wonderful opportunity for two families travelling as a group when booked together.
Cleverly designed, Melitina sits in immaculate landscaped gardens leading down towards the sea, with areas of lawn and several spacious terraces for stretching out and drinking in the vista. Though there’s no direct sea access, it affords all the other privileges of its waterfront position; uninterrupted views and the soothing sound of the waves as they break on the rocks beneath. Spacious, comfortable interiors are all you could wish for, stylishly furnished with contemporary touches reflecting the owners’ impeccable eye for detail. Three en-suite bedrooms are furnished with comfy beds and luxury linens and on the lower ground floor there is a sauna and a home cinema, which doubles as a twin bedroom with two single sofa beds for teenagers and a separate bathroom.
Daily breakfast is included and served at the villa; an indulgent extra that sees every day off to a glowing start. Outside, the well-equipped summer kitchen, comfortable dining area and perfectly placed infinity pool add to the joy of carefree summer living and our local concierge will be happy to arrange groceries and drinks to be delivered before and during your stay if you relish the idea of further at-home entertaining. But there’s a lovely selection of arty cafés, bars and tavernas in Mochlos to tempt you away; an attractive prospect at any time of day but never more so than in the evenings when the lights are reflected in the water and the gentle song of the sea is the backdrop to the atmospheric music and lively chatter. This is hidden Crete at its best – charming, timeless, blissfully undone, with an enticing choice of Cretan fare just waiting to be enjoyed.

We had a truly amazing stay at Melitina! We are all sad to leave but definitely hope it won’t be our last. Thank you Nikos and Sofia for providing us with a luxury villa for a week and waking up to a delicious ready-made breakfast. The views from our balcony and elsewhere were incredible. There are so many places to sit – sofas, bean bags, sunbeds – pure luxury. The pool is also a lovely temperature – great for cooling down on warm days. Hope to be back soon.
We had a wonderful time relaxing in Melitina, this fabulous villa is set in the most stunning location! It has been a lovely place to relax, whilst also being close enough to some spectacular towns enabling us to get the most out of the experience of coming to such a beautiful island.
Our first time here and hoping it won’t be our last. A big thank you to Nikos for all his excellent recommendations – some truly memorable meals – and to Sofia for all her hard work. It was lovely spending time here and around Mochlos, but we would also recommend a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion if you are interested in the ancient history of Crete.

A wonderful week spent in the as yet unspoilt villlage on the north eastern coast of Crete. Plenty to do to keep the restless busy from mountain biking to hiking in the dramatic mountains to exploring the coastline by boat. We were surprised to find such a tranquil and underdeveloped coastal village on the coast. Melitina occupies a stunning spot overlooking the sea a 5 minute wander from several great tavernas. The service from our rep and housekeeping duo was really exemplary making our week go without a hitch.Many thanks to all involved.
