  • Beautiful 18th-century mansion
  • Stunning and spacious grounds
  • Full of Provençale character
  • Completely private

From its painted shutters to its pretty rose garden, this gracious 18th-century manor house is pure Provence, nestled between the Alpilles national park and the mighty river Rhône. Set in magnificent grounds, complete with semi-formal gardens and numerous areas to eat, drink, read and relax, La Boulbon offers complete privacy within easy reach of some of the most noteworthy attractions of the area.

The house has been gently modernised to provide a bathroom for each of the six bedrooms (ideal for a group of couples or friends), but the style overall remains true to Provençale tradition, a mix of local antiques and family heirlooms that create a homely atmosphere despite the grand proportions. The gardens feel almost big enough to get lost in – perfect for a family game of hide-and-seek – with an impressive private pool and poolhouse for keeping the drinks cool in the heat of the day. You could vanish quite happily off grid for a week or more here, cocooned in the peace and privacy of the manor, but it would be a shame not to venture at least as far as Boulbon village, with its picturesque medieval château, or the splendid Roman cities of Arles, Avignon and Nîmes. Riverside Tarascon, famous for its Tuesday market and near-perfectly preserved 15th-century castle, is less than 10 minutes’ drive.

The local area

The medieval village of Boulbon is only 3km away, and you could not find a more Provençale experience than lunch at the Café du Commerce, especially on market day (Monday). Boulbon is ideally placed on the edge of the Alpilles region, where the twisted limestone landscape of the Parc des Alpilles rises dramatically from the Rhône plain. Familiar names seem to adorn every signpost in the area: drive 15 minutes north and you can be at the Papal Palace in Avignon, while 15 minutes to the east through beautiful countryside you’ll find St-Rémy de Provence, brimming with inviting bars and cafés.

Teetering on the northern tip of the Camargue is historic Arles, with its 1st-century amphitheatre; Van Gogh came to Arles in 1888 and was inspired by the town and its light, producing many of his greatest works until madness overtook him. Roman Nîmes is around 40 minutes away by car, and for a history lesson with the chance of a cooling swim thrown in, the spectacular Pont du Gard (25km) is well worth the trip.
