Simpson Safe

Holidays will be different this summer. Find out how travel is changing and what we are doing to keep you safe here

Summer holidays are all about easy living, and that’s exactly what you get at Villa Ami. Contemporary in style, with a practical, open-plan layout, this is a lovely spot for long lazy days by the pool, flitting between sun and shade cast by the huge old cork tree in the garden.

Ami’s other big plus is its location. The villa sits in a quiet residential area of Seignosse Bourg, some seven kilometres from the ocean, with a bakery, bar, restaurant, small supermarket and renowned tennis centre all within walking distance. This house works particularly well for families, with an enclosed garden for peace of mind and table tennis for older children. Teens tend to love Hossegor, with biking, paddle-boarding, surf boutiques, kayaking, and water parks all on the agenda in addition to the world-class surf spots. And once your beach day draws to a close, Villa Ami makes a very convenient retreat to enjoy an easy family barbecue as the sun goes down, or a simple plat du jour in the restaurant nearby.

Please note that since the gallery photographs were taken, Villa Ami has been extended to create extra living space and the pool and decking area has undergone some improvements to create an even more comfortable outdoor environment.

The local area

There’s no shortage of beaches here, both wild and organised. The most celebrated for surfing (or sunbathing and watching the surfers) are Les Estagnots, Bourdaines and Le Penon, all clustered around nearby Seignosse Ocean, which also offers a water park and a little low-key nightlife.

If you need to stock up on swim, sports or fashionable surfwear, just two kilometres away lies a shopping mecca: the retail village of La Zone Pédebert which features all the big brands, plus beer, wine and tasteful souvenirs – and there are restaurants and cafés too should you need a break!

This is destination made for those who love to be outdoors and active and the Seignosse Bourg tennis centre, just a kilometre away, is a great way to let off steam or you can hire bikes and let your curiosity lead you along one of the area’s many pine-shaded cycling trails. For golfers, the Seignosse course is a must, ranked in continental Europe’s top 50, with a very welcoming clubhouse restaurant and bar.

Alternatively, nature lovers can find refuge in the peaceful Marais d’Orx, a wetland reserve with high-sided wooden walkways, perfectly safe for little ones, who can also try a spot of birdwatching from the covered hides.

Hossegor town is about six kilometres away. A hub for the international surfing community, it’s youthful in outlook, with chic boutiques and markets, miles of surrounding cycle trails and a lovely lake if you don’t fancy the waves. It also has an easy charm that lends itself perfectly to long leisurely brunches or takeaway pizza on the beach at sunset. However, this being France, you’re never short of an excellent meal, particularly in neighbouring Capbreton – a more authentic French experience with some of the area’s best seafood in the marina restaurants, as well as an excellent morning fish market.

Days out

Bayonne, the ‘chocolate capital ‘of France and host to its largest festival, is around half an hour’s drive away, whilst Biarritz is just a little further on. Here, Belle Époque glamour sits alongside a vibrant shopping, eating and cultural scene, all the more appealing for its dramatic coastal location. The Basque villages in all their pristine uniformity offer an insight into the area’s rich cultural heritage, or visit St-Jean-de-Luz, pure beach heaven for families with a beautiful historic town behind. You can even hop across the border into Spain for some quality time in the atmospheric coastal town of Hondarrabia. Catch the ferry from Hendaye and enjoy a packed calendar of festivals and some excellent tapas restaurants.

Charlie, the housekeeper, was great and sourced us a highchair (as requested) and a fan.

We had a great holiday and the house was wonderful.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Once entirely marshland, this region is now a natural playground of sand dunes and beaches, pine forests and picturesque lakes, where walking and cycling are the most pleasurable ways of getting around. An idyllic meeting of France and California with truly spectacular waves and wide-ranging cuisine, upmarket Hossegor thrives on a surfing culture of stylish, laid-back living. However, in authentic Capbreton next door, and many of the towns and villages no more than an hour away, the historical roots go deeper and there’s much to explore.
