If you’re looking for lots of family-friendly space, with the luxury of an en-suite shower for every bedroom, this contemporary home near Hossegor should be at the top of the shortlist. From the polished wood floors to the stylish eat-in kitchen, La Grange is designed for easy holiday living, with a mezzanine TV area for teens to retreat to and an outside space for younger children to play in. There’s ample lounging room around the heated, salt-filtered pool, which can be covered for safety, and a large covered dining area for lazy breakfasts or long lunches out of the glare of the midday sun. Family suites and spacious doubles make this a particularly practical choice for two families or a multi-generational gathering, with almost endless possibilities for activities and days out in the local area.

The villa feels nicely secluded in quiet countryside on the outskirts of Angresse; the owners live in their own separate property some 100 metres away, so there’s always help on hand if you need it, but your privacy is never compromised.

The local area

Angresse provides for your basic daily needs with its bar, bakery and grocery shop, but you’ll doubtless want to explore chic Hossegor, a vibrant town where sophisticated France meets laid-back California to idyllic effect. Here shopping, brunching, watersports and water parks are all on the agenda – as well as even more glorious sandy beaches. For those tempted to try surfing or body-boarding, this is a perfect spot, but if the tumbling breakers of the Atlantic aren’t your thing, there are plenty of alternatives, whether you fancy a leisurely day cycling through pine forests, browsing a bustling bric-a-brac market or paddle-boarding on Hossegor’s lovely lake. Neighbouring Capbreton has a more authentically French feel and, around the marina, you’ll find some of the area’s best fish restaurants, as well as a daily fish market if you fancy eating in.

Alternatively, nature lovers can find refuge in the peaceful Marais d’Orx, a wetland reserve with high-sided wooden walkways, perfectly safe for little ones, who can also try a spot of birdwatching from the covered hides.

Days out

Bayonne is about half an hour away, the capital of the Pays Basque and the ‘chocolate capital’ of France – and don’t miss the spectacular interiors of its twin-spired cathedral. A little further on, you’ll find Biarritz. Here, Belle Époque glamour sits alongside a vibrant shopping, eating and cultural scene, all the more impressive for its dramatic coastal location. The Basque countryside is also a delight to explore, from its pretty hilltop villages to celebrated St-Jean-de-Luz, pure beach heaven for families with a beautifully atmospheric, historic town behind. You can even catch the ferry from Hendaye into Spain for some quality time and tapas in the colourful coastal town of Hondarrabia.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Once entirely marshland, this region is now a natural playground of sand dunes and beaches, pine forests and picturesque lakes, where walking and cycling are the most pleasurable ways of getting around. An idyllic meeting of France and California with truly spectacular waves and wide-ranging cuisine, upmarket Hossegor thrives on a surfing culture of stylish, laid-back living.
