Tucked away at the far eastern end of the Gulf of Mirabello, Mochlos and its enticingly pristine shoreline appeals to the slightly more intrepid Simpson Traveller, rewarding those who choose the road less travelled with a vision of Crete as it used to be.
Nestled above the village, charming Villa Fegari makes a delightful base for two, with stunning views over Mochlos and the rugged coast beyond. It’s the uppermost of four, cottage-style houses, carefully constructed using stone and timber in keeping with the quietly spectacular natural surroundings. Fegari is newer than it looks however, with simple yet immaculate interiors offering everything you need for a comfortable stay. There’s plenty of private outdoor space here to make the most of the sea and mountain views, giving you an idyllic spot for breakfast or perhaps a pre-dinner drink before you stroll down into the village. The icing on this deliciously authentic cake is a brand new small private pool.
If you prefer to swim in the sea, there’s a pretty sandy beach and plenty of rocks to launch yourself off; jelly shoes are helpful and the gin-clear water makes a mask and snorkel well worthwhile. Serious swimmers can cross to the Minoan ruins on the island just offshore, but it’s more than acceptable just to paddle or lounge in the sunshine and enjoy the peace and the views. Despite its pint-sized proportions, Mochlos is a very inviting place to eat and drink. From a quiet cappuccino to the catch of the day, each meal feels like a special occasion when your table for two is just inches from the gently lapping sea. And while this hidden corner of Crete feels blissfully removed from modern development, upmarket Agios Nikolaos is just a 45-minute drive away around the bay if you feel like a change of pace and the more traditional town of Sitia, also 45 minutes away, is the gateway to hidden Crete.

A real ‘letting go’ in this little corner of paradise, we enjoyed the beauty of the landscape and the kindness of the inhabitants. We will be back with pleasure.
Thank you Eleni and Niko for a wonderful week. It was magical, wonderful views and peace to boot. The village was everything we hoped for, welcoming tavernas, clear blue water for swimming and welcoming locals.
This was our first year with Simpson Travel and we found everything went very smoothly. Everyone from the car hire representatives, to our concierge (Nicos in Mochlos and Joanne in Vamos) were extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. We will definitely book with you again.
A very peaceful week in the comfort of the villa with the kindness of Eleni and Nikos to make the holiday extra special. Thank you.
From our first contact with Simpson Travel we found all staff extremely helpful, friendly and efficient. We thought the locations of both sets of accommodation where we stayed were unique and special. We really liked meeting the owners in both sets of accommodation and felt that we were being welcomed into the Simpson “family”. We would definitely consider travelling again with Simpson Travel.
We loved the villa, and were very comfortable. Eleni and Nikos were lovely, welcoming and enormously helpful - could not have been better, THANK YOU!
We had a wonderful week - the views are amazing! Everything you need at the villa and our hosts Eleni and Nikos were really lovely and helpful and kind. This area of Crete is so tranquil and restful. Still so much to see so hope to be back and recommending to family back home. Thank you so much.
An idyllic week in this beautiful tranquil part of Crete. Definitely the 'path less travelled" We thank you for the lovely care and surroundings of Villa Fegari. We hope to come here again. Fantastic restaurants in Mochlos each night.
Our choice of Greek properties is as diverse as the islands themselves, ranging from simple seaside charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal. To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.
* For further clarification on Facilities and Amenities, please view the 'Details' tab for each property or speak to one of our experienced sales consultants.
The Gulf of Mirabello is one of the most sought after enclaves of Crete. Here you'll find Elounda, a pretty waterfront town hosting some of the island's most exclusive hotels and restaurants and regular ferries across to the former leper colony Spinalonga, a disconcertingly beautiful island with a fascinating history made famous by Victoria Hislop's novel The Island. A little further east, fashionable Agios Nikolaos is a lively town with an abundance of charm and a great selection of restaurants and shops around the harbour.
But as you leave the Gulf of Mirabello behind and head south or east, the island reveals a rugged landscape harbouring the soul food of a simpler life. Our portfolio here celebrates the road less travelled, transporting guests from the mainstream to a hidden Crete that's often overlooked. From gorges and caves to the mountain communities of the beautiful Lasithi Plateau, from the tucked away waterfront village of Mochlos in the north to the timeless landscapes and homely tavernas surrounding Makrigialos in the south – this is Crete at its most warmly welcoming, without artifice, where you’re a guest and never a tourist.
