Beach holidays on Cap Ferret
This narrow peninsula is beach heaven, with a 22km stretch of fine sand on the Atlantic coast, and a string of smaller beaches on the sheltered Arcachon Bay side. Families are well catered for, with beach clubs and children’s activities during high season, and sailing lessons all summer long. You can walk to the beach from all of our villas, but if you’d like to see a little more of the area, pedal power is the way to go and there are plenty of bike paths and hire shops to make it easy. Alternatively hop on the train to L’Horizon Beach, or when you’ve had enough sand between your toes, Cap Ferret village is the place to head for chic shops and oysters fresh from the sea.
Exploring the Bay of Arcachon
Arcachon town sits across the sea from Cap Ferret, guarding the entrance to the bay. The resort has a lively buzz in the holiday season but retains plenty of character, from the boules alleys of the Parc Mauresque to the quirky style of the Ville d’Hiver. There are numerous wonderful beaches all around the bay, each with its own character, including one of our favourites Péreire, backed by a tree-lined promenade. Local ferries and boat trips let you explore the bay, which is home to a huge variety of birdlife. To the south is the 100-metre high Dune du Pilat, Europe’s tallest sand dune and well worth the slog to the top, most rewarding at sunrise or sunset.
