The best warm weather destinations in Europe for the October school holidays
October and November are officially the wettest months of the year in the UK, so it makes perfect sense to escape to warmer, drier destinations while you still can. But which is the best place for a half-term holiday with the kids that doesn’t involve long-haul flights? Southern Europe is wonderful at this time of the year, with plenty of sunshine hours and sea temperatures comfortably warm after a long hot summer. Whether you’re looking for some city culture, an active sports break, downtime by a private villa pool or a combination of all three, here’s where we recommend for October half term 2026.
October break on the Algarve
The Algarve is one of the sunniest spots in Europe, with a range of quality villas (some with heated pools) that are designed for year-round use so you’re guaranteed a comfy base. In addition to golf and tennis, it’s also unrivalled in its choice of family activities, from golf to go-karting, padel to petting zoos, so there’s masses to do whatever the weather.
Half-term holidays in Mallorca in October
One of our all-round family favourites for villa holidays, Mallorca lets you combine pool and beach days around Pollensa with a little city life, plus offers the likelihood of warm sunshine in October. The capital Palma is full of chic shops and tempting tapas bars, with museums and contemporary art galleries for the more culturally curious. You’re never more than an hour’s drive from the city, or take the train for a fun and very easy family day out.

October in Turkey means daytime highs up to 24C, and the sea is round about the same temperature, lovely for swimming! If you prefer a pool swim, choose a luxury villa with a fabulous sea view. Relax and solar-charge your batteries ahead of the winter months to come, or take advantage of this quiet time to explore the incredible archaeological sites around Kalkan.
October half term in Greece
Stretch out summer a little bit longer and take a trip to the Peloponnese on mainland Greece. One of the most richly historic corners of Greece, the Peloponnese also has reliable October weather, wonderful sandy beaches and top little resorts like Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos, full of excellent and well-priced restaurants. Low key and family-friendly, the perfect October half term destination.
