Things to do on Paxos: seven special experiences

Most people come to Paxos to escape their to-do list rather than create one, and this petit paradise is certainly blissful place to wind down, take in the view and do nothing much at all. If, however, you’re a fan of gentle walks through nature at its most inspiring, mini voyages of discovery around a scenically stunning coastline and star-gazing on soft summer evenings, Paxos offers some beautifully enriching experiences to make your stay even more special. Think of it as a things-to-love list!

Seven special things to do on Paxos

Let the fireflies guide you home

In May and June, the olive groves of Paxos are lit up each evening by the glow of thousands of fireflies flashing in the dark in the hope of attracting a mate. You can find these curious creatures all over the Ionians, but Paxos is a top spot to see them due to the comparative absence of artificial light – a magical sight as you walk home after dinner.

Lakka, Paxos

Lovely Lakka

The harbour village of Lakka wraps around a beautiful, horseshoe-shaped bay at the northern tip of Paxos. The bay is very sheltered, making this a particularly lovely swimming spot. There’s also a clutch of top-rated tavernas here, so make sure you arrive hungry!

Windmill with a view

Paxos once had over 20 working windmills to grind grain to feed its inhabitants. None are active today, but if you follow the path through the olives to Tranakatika just outside Gaios, you’ll find the ruins of Lesianitis. There are steps inside (take care, no hand rails!) and the short climb to the top rewards with views of Panagia island, Corfu and even Lefkada on a clear day.

Sunsets and star-gazing

The west of the island is naturally the best place for sunsets, providing a daily spectacle that feels almost humbling in its beauty. Plani beach is a favourite spot to watch the sun go down, and if you’re not in a hurry, why not stay a while and see who can spot the first star appearing in the clear night sky.

Paxos pastries

If you’re more of a morning person, start your day by witnessing the sun rise over one of the east coast beaches, perhaps followed by a swim. Reward yourself afterwards with some sublimely good pastries from one of the Gaios bakeries for a truly indulgent holiday breakfast.

Tripitos Arch

Tripitos Arch

If you want maximum scenic wow for minimum effort, this much-photographed rock arch fits the bill perfectly. Located near Gaios, you can drive to within strolling distance of the rock formation, which towers above the clear sapphire sea below. For those with a good head for heights, you can also walk across it.

Rent a boat

If you don’t fancy the dizzying view of Tripitos Arch from above, you can also motor through it on your own little boat, no licence required. Boat hire is the best way to discover Paxos by far, with cliffs, caves and secret swim spots to enjoy all around its glorious coastline.
