The distinctive trulli houses of Puglia are a taste of the region as it was over 500 years ago and, transformed through a four-year labour of love, Trullo Rosalinda is the chance to soak up a little of this history. It’s as much a part of the landscape as the ancient olive trees, but lovingly and creatively restored by owners Rosalinda and Leo, it now offers a genuinely unique and charming place to say.

The whiter-than-white walls are edged with natural stone the colour of amaretti biscuits, whilst arched windows, doorways and wall alcoves reflect the gentle curves of the high, domed ceilings. Sheer curtains gently diffuse the light to create a calm space, as welcoming and cool in summer as it is creatively designed: a home with no hard corners and generous amounts of vintage chic, natural wood and fascinating ornaments and light fittings to soften the overall effect.

Ideal for couples or young families travelling together, there are three separate areas within the trulli, each with their own entrance. The first, Lavanda, is the communal kitchen; the second, Papavero, a suite with two double bedrooms and a small kitchen and dining area, and the third, Fresia, with a double bedroom and the same space for cooking and enjoying meals together.

The more organic design style extends to the garden too, which is more tamed than cultivated. Ancient olive trees, up to 400 years old, provide pockets of shade across the lush green lawns, their gnarled trunks each a twisted work of art and spotlit at night. In keeping with the informal style, the infinity pool is circular, lavender fragrancing the air around it. And if you’re not soaking up the sun from a poolside sunbed, there’s the potential for lunches and dinner outside on a solid stone table, as well as extra seating with parasols on stand-by if you need them. An additional covered area has a firepit taking centre stage for atmospheric evenings or drying off after a late-night swim.

With a choice of restaurants, Cristo Re is your nearest village, less than a ten-minute drive away. Every August, it plays its part in a religious ceremony during which a statue of the Virgin Mary from the historic town of Santa Maria di Leuca is paraded through the streets and down to the port from where it’s sailed across to San Gregorio and back – reason enough for fireworks and a party!

Monopoli, with its historic old town, castle and pretty harbour is just a 20-minute drive away. From there you can hire boats, shop for the delicious local food and drink and dine out in style.
