The best beaches on Skopelos and where to stay

Small and undeveloped despite superb beaches and a vibrant little capital, Skopelos feels like the perfect Greek island if you like a side order of sophistication along with your green and unspoilt landscapes. Skopelos is an inspired base for villas holidays as well as hotel breaks. Located in the Sporades, Skopelos is about the same size as Ithaca, and you can drive from end to end in well under an hour. Expect fragrant pine forests that tumble down to turquoise seas, golden beaches, a thriving restaurant scene and of course, that famously romantic chapel from Mamma Mia!

The Best Skopelos Beaches

From sociable to secluded, Skopelos’ beaches reward exploration. Each has its own mood – just follow our guide to find your favourite.

On the island’s west coast, Milia sets the tone with its elegant mix of white sand and pebbles, backed by fragrant pine trees and washed by sea as clear as a shot of tsipouro. It’s sociable but stylish, with sunbeds, watersports, and a beach bar that turns sunset into an event – arrive early in high season to secure your spot.

Just beyond, Kastani delivers cinematic drama. Famous for its starring role in Mamma Mia!, it’s all turquoise shallows and emerald hills, hugely photogenic yet easy-going enough for a full day under an umbrella with lunch close at hand.

Closer to town, Stafilos offers a gentler rhythm. Shallow waters, natural shade and a sand-and-pebble mix make it ideal for families or a relaxed half-day paired with lunch in Skopelos Town. For something quieter still, walk over the headland to Velanio.

Hovolo

Sheltered Panormos is the place to go on windy days, its arc of beach lined with tavernas, each with a blissful sea view.  Meanwhile, Limnonari has that old-style island vibe with calm water, pine trees for shade and a slower, more local feel.

Hovolo is a hidden gem just north of Neo Klima village, and you’ll need to either wade through the sea or walk along a rocky – but sign-posted – path to reach it. Bring your own supplies and spend a day swimming or snorkelling in the peacock-blue water.

Skopelos Town

Draped amphitheatrically around its harbour, Skopelos Town packs all the classic elements of Greece’s prettiest islands into one charming spot: whitewashed houses adorned with shocking pink bougainvillea rise above a lively waterfront and happy chatter mingles with the chime of church bells. Picture a mini-Mykonos, minus the influencer crowds. There’s even a beach right here in town, with many more to explore around its quietly beautiful shores.

This is a town best experienced on foot, preferably without a plan. Mornings begin with coffee by the water, fishing boats nudging gently against the quay as the catch of the day flashes silver in the early sunlight. As the heat rises, the shaded backstreets come alive; stone stairways lead to elegant neoclassical homes and inviting little shops stocked with hand-finished linens, ceramics, herbs and oils. When evening comes, the harbour takes on a low-key glamour – candles flicker, glasses clink and menus tempt with a rather more sophisticated choice of dishes than you might expect.

Skopelos Town remains resolutely lived-in – visitors are warmly welcomed but tourism has not taken over. Locals linger over lunch, most shops respect the tradition of closing for an hour or two in the afternoon, and the pace is geared towards those who have lived and worked on the island for generations. Here and there are architectural reminders of past empires, but the real appeal is the absence of any headline attractions, leaving space in your mind and your day to simply relax and enjoy its restrained charm.
