In a peaceful grove of silvery olive tree lies Villa Sonatina. One of two detached private villas, close to Arkadi Monastery, with views over the countryside towards the sea and perfectly positioned for exploring both the north and south coasts. The setting is rural, yet the welcoming restaurant at the Kapsaliana Village Hotel and the traditional taverna in Amnatos Village are only a few minutes’ walk away. Rethymno has a wide range of shops and restaurants and its narrow streets hide numerous fragments of Crete's colourful past: a castle, 16th-century mansions, old mosques and a splendid carved fountain.
Villa Sonatina and neighbouring Villa Adagio are entirely independent and relatively private from one another but can be rented together.

Beautifully organised...villa was superb...will definitely be using Simpson travel again.
Fourth time using Simpson Travel and the Villa Sonatina didn't disappoint. Service from Simpson from ease of booking, use of web and app data and information was easy, comprehensive and reassuringly professional. All Simpson staff were excellent throughout - kind courteous and helpful. Special mention must go to Vasilis the on-site rep who was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and ensured we had everything we needed to make our holiday special. The villa itself was very high quality throughout, well maintained, spotlessly clean and comprehensively equipped. Sonatina is an ideal chill out location, very quiet, private with lots of wildlife. Thoroughly recommend and will look to use Simpsons again for future villa holidays.
We enjoyed a delightful week at Villa Sonatina, where the setting among the olive trees is peaceful and truly idyllic, accompanied by the gentle sounds of sheep bells and birdsong. The villa has been thoughtfully and tastefully furnished and equipped, nothing has been forgotten, and the owners, Ray and Michelle, who were around throughout our stay, were most welcoming and helpful without being intrusive.
Villa Sonatina was everything we ask for in a Simpsons holiday, quality and location being so important. A very well equipped villa with a great pool and outdoor space for relaxing in the glorious weather. We did not go to far but went to Arkadi Monastry which was very relaxing and informative. Kostoula our local rep was excellent and very informative. Will definitely be back.
Villa Sonatina is perfect for those looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday away from crowds and the hurley-burley of everyday life. The villa is well equipped with everything you may need and is set in lovely private surroundings. Unless you cater at home you will need to drive to restaurants of which there are many that can be recommended by your rep or by previous guests. A good place for bird life - eagles, peregrines and buzzards overhead and swallows dipping in the pool. We thoroughly recommend a stay here.
A lovely villa, especially perfect for this year with Covid-19 concerns. We had a couple of meals in the village taverna, one the first night which we enjoyed We did have 3 very enjoyable meals at the hotel, which also took the trouble to mark my birthday by bringing out a lovely cake – much appreciated. Harvey was brilliant – there when we needed him but not in your face. Contacting us very promptly when the FCO changed the rules for Crete. Great holiday which was needed in this difficult year.
Two weeks of sun always helps but we’ve had a fantastic time, dividing it between sitting by the pool and dragging ourselves away to visit a variety of places. Rethymno, Chania (very pretty) and Heraklion. Here the Archaeological Museum is really excellent and well worth a visit. Went there on a weekday which was good but Chania on a Saturday is market day and parking might be a little harder. Drove to Armeni tombs (very good) and Preveli beach though didn’t descend down the path. Went to Amnoudaki beach instead which was quiet and restful in comparison. But the drive there and back outstanding were through both gorges. On way home we diverted through Spili and then to Garakari and Thronos and home. We’d do more in the Amari valley next time. All in all a really wonderful two weeks with excellent meals at the Kapsaliana, Maria’s and Taverna Farangi plus En Plo beside the sea at Rethymno. Many thanks to Klaudia who made everything so straightforward and was so helpful with her advice. Great beds! Both upstairs and by the pool – a very special villa.
A wonderful holiday and first visit to Crete. Beautiful villa in a lovely peaceful location. Simpson thought of everything and nothing was too much trouble for Klaudia, our rep. She was so helpful and friendly. A stress free but independent holiday....thanks Simpson.
We had a very relaxing time just reading and swimming in the pool. We had occasional trips out Arkadi Monastery, Rethymno etc. but by far the best thing was being in the villa by the pool. Klaudia, our Simpson rep, was wonderful. Friendly, knowledgeable and she was always at the end of a phone if we had a query. Thank you.
Having spent a very pampered week at Simpson’s lovely Arosmari Village Hotel in Vamos, we were delighted to arrive at Sonatina to enjoy the peaceful away-from-it-all location at this gorgeous villa. Highlights – Arkadi Monastery – lucky to be so close to this atmospheric place – so beautifully maintained. Drive through Amari Valley, the church at Thronos is amazing. Maria’s Taverna in Amnatos villa – simple, well cooked food – and no menu – just what she has freshly cooked. We loved Crete – and will be back.
Last on Crete in 1976/77 when I worked on the island. A wonderful week down memory lane. Fabulous villa – loved every minute. Thank you Klaudia and Simpson Travel.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Villa Sonatina. It was a perfect, quiet location for us. The large garden and pool were an added bonus. The villa was well stocked and we were surprised and delighted with the generous welcome pack. Really looking forward to our next Simpson holiday.
We really enjoyed two weeks in the comfortable, well-equipped and peaceful Villa Sonatina. Ray was a great source of advice and we enjoyed several local visits. Also, we enjoyed Kapsaliana Village Hotel for their tasty menu and the walk back with the clean starlit skies – no lights on the road, so really unspoilt. We spent a lot of time sitting on the terrace with a leisurely dinner, watching bats dipping over the pool. We used the barbecue a few times when the evenings were still and really enjoyed it. This is our third holiday with Simpson Travel and it lived up to our high expectations.
Villa Sonatina exceeded our expectations. It’s in a lovely situation surrounded by mature olive trees and with sea views. It’s very private and has a super pool. We drove to lovely beach on South coast about an hour’s drive away.
Having travelled with Simpson Travel before we were expecting something really good, but Villa Sonatina is pretty special. We immediately fell in love with the view to the sea and the olive trees. Drove south to Plakias and spent a day at Schinaria – a lovely bay with safe swimming. The Garden Restaurant was lovely. Family run, we were shown all the food and it all looked delicious and so fresh! The drive through Amari Valley is very enjoyable and the coffee at the wonderful taverna in Meronas is a unique experience. Visited Arkadi Monastery early evening – very beautiful! We had a great week!
Wonderful, relaxing week in beautiful rural surroundings.
It has been a delight enjoying the villa and pool in this fabulously rural part of Crete. Especially as the last few days have seen temperatures up to 45C! As only here a week we didn't venture far, apart from our trip to the southern beaches, via Arkadi Monastery. Stunning drive through the mountains. Tried a beach at Georgioupoli, a long sandy beach with some good swimming. A lovely relaxing week – we shall be back!
Great service anticipating customers' needs in the run-up to the holiday and very well organised and knowledgeable reps in Crete made the whole travel process relaxed and pleasurable.
As a first time Simpson Travel user and a confirmed 'independent' traveller, we were very impressed by the smoothness of the whole operation to the point where it could easily be termed 'slick'. Your representative in Crete, Ray Pattenden was particularly good and effective and made the holiday work so well. We were also surprised just how good the service was from your car hire operator, Zakros. We will seriously consider repeating the experience in the future.
The villa is fabulous and the views breathtaking. The many personal touches in the villa make it very 'home from home'. Our hosts have really looked after us and the gifts are much appreciated. The Paradis cove is our favourite beach for sunbathing, swimming and lunch. We ate excellent fish at the lovely restaurant in Kissamos. Thank you to Eleni and George for a brilliant break!
Our choice of Greek properties is as diverse as the islands themselves, ranging from simple seaside charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal. To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

As the birthplace of Zeus, Central Crete carries a certain historic and spiritual gravitas. Knossos, the Minoan Bronze Age palace, steals the show, but there are many other smaller archaeological sites, churches and towns to cast you back in time. However, with harbourside dining, beautiful beaches, mountain villages and vibrant summer festivals, the here and now also has a lot to offer. And Rethymno, which has clung on to much of its authentic beauty and charm, is a welcome addition to your island experience.
