It’s hard not to fall in love with Puglia’s quirky, conical-roofed trulli, especially when they are as beautifully finished as this absolute gem near Ostuni. Set in its own large plot, with a spacious contemporary extension that guarantees comfort as well as character, it’s a  wonderful spot within easy reach of southern Puglia’s most noteworthy towns and beaches.

The original trullo has been cleverly converted to form a charming, snug double with its own en suite shower room, so if you’re after the authentic, exposed-brickwork trullo experience, this is the room for you. The trullo room opens directly onto the garden and pool area, which means there’s a good amount of light despite the historic construction. Alternatively, there is another larger bedroom, again with a full en suite, in the adjoining modern wing of the property, so the house can easily accommodate two couples or perhaps a small family.

In addition to the two bedrooms, there’s a small living/dining/kitchen area, but the focus here is really on outdoor living so you can make the most of Puglia’s long summer days and balmy evenings. The outdoor space is extremely well equipped, with a covered kitchen, barbecue and dining area, complete with bar stools for your evening aperitivo. A daybed beckons beside the 12-metre swimming pool, with loungers in the shade if you prefer. It’s about 15 minutes in the car to get to the white city of Ostuni, which rises impressively above an otherwise flat landscape. Take a few hours to discover the labyrinthine lanes of the Old Town, designed to perplex invaders, then reward yourself with something deliciously chilled as you watch the stylish Puglian world saunter by at the Piazza Libertà. For beaches and more fabulous places to eat and drink, Marina d’Ostuni is just another five to ten minutes further in the car.
