Despite this pleasantly tucked away feeling, guests staying at Casa Margarida also have the huge benefit of a selection of restaurants and a small supermarket within walking distance: a much sought-after combination, and conveniently close to Carvoeiro too.
Casa Margarida has a single story layout, with just three steps down to the pool at the rear of the house. Splashes of bright colour come from the bougainvillea and climbers that clamber and twine around the edge of the verandah, setting the scene for long summer lunches in the shade. Simple barbecues are a stress-free way to self-cater, but if the chef wants a night – or a week – off, there are restaurants within strolling distance (around 900m). The Algarve is famous for its ochre-coloured cliffs, and you can take some wonderful walks along the coast path past the Alfanzina lighthouse which is just a minute or two’s walk away. For beaches, head to Carvalho, Benagil or Vale do Centianes, or discover the unique coastline by kayak on one of the many guided trips available locally.

Algarve holidays promise a wealth of different experiences and landscapes, whether you choose a private villa or a hotel as your base.

Portuguese cuisine is in our view one of the most underrated in Europe, so prepare to be deliciously surprised by fresh fish, hearty stews, sweet pastries and of course, world-renowned wines: saúde!
