For a taste of classic French country living, La Chartreuse boasts all the right ingredients. Set in delightful private gardens, this spacious maison de maître has immediate kerb appeal thanks to its elegant proportions, pale blue shutters and lovely edge-of-village location. Inside, tasteful décor, traditional flooring (flagstones in the hall and living rooms, parquet in the dining room) and a host of characterful features add to its charms, creating a mood of refined informality and relaxed style.

Inside, tasteful décor, traditional flooring (flagstones in the hall and living rooms, parquet in the dining room) and a host of characterful features add to its charms, creating a mood of refined informality and relaxed style.

Set over three floors, the house comfortably accommodates groups of 10 and on the top floor there is even a large games room – a paradise for the young at heart, with table football and a TV with Netflix, DVD player and DVD library.

Outside, the lawned gardens are wonderfully private and offer plenty of space for large groups to spread out and enjoy the spot, whether hard at rest or play. Table tennis and boules are provided, and the generous heated pool is equally suited to serious swimming or splashing about in the sunshine. Alfresco entertaining is a dream thanks to a built-in barbecue and Green Egg cooker and the wooden dining table on the terrace is very much at the heart of the home in the summer months.

The Local Area

La Chartreuse enjoys an ideal edge-of-village location in St Jean de Marsacq, within walking distance of the local mini-market (with bakery) and restaurant. The surrounding countryside is a peaceful reflection of rural life in Aquitaine but the world-class beaches and surf scene of Hossegor are just a 25-minute drive away, when you fancy a little more action. Here you’ll find an excellent choice of shops, restaurants, weekly markets and oyster shacks, and the centre is a magnet for style-conscious teens wanting to explore the trendy boutiques and cafés. The numerous trails connecting the coast, forests and lagoons make cycling here a joy and golf lovers will enjoy the 18-hole courses at Hossegor and nearby Seignosse.

Customer testimonials

We had such a wonderful stay and would absolutely recommend this beautiful house. The welcome we received was lovely, with a bottle of champagne waiting for us on arrival — such a thoughtful touch and a perfect way to start our holiday! The grounds were absolutely perfect for us, especially with Pearl our Golden Retriever . They were secure and gave her plenty of space to run around and explore safely. She even made friends with the cheeky chicken, who seemed to have a habit of flying over their enclosure — which provided plenty of entertainment! Kate and Ben were the perfect hosts. They were always on hand whenever we needed anything and couldn’t have been more helpful. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and their warmth and hospitality really made our stay feel special. The house itself was incredibly well equipped. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need, the bedding was amazing and so comfortable, and the pool was the perfect temperature. We also really appreciated having the stereo available, which was a lovely addition to our stay. The location was convenient for everyday essentials, with shops just at the top of the road. The beach was around a 24-minute drive away, which was worth bearing in mind when planning days out. We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better stay. The house was comfortable, welcoming and had everything we needed. We will most definitely be booking again! Thank you so much, Kate and Ben, for making our stay so lovely. We would wholeheartedly recommend this house and can’t wait to return!

Mrs Nina O'Malley September 2026

We spent a week at La Chartreuse in August 2026 to celebrate a significant birthday with our family, including 4 grandsons aged 10 to 12. We had the best possible time. The house has a wonderful calm atmosphere, and is very spacious, well-equipped and remained cool despite the intense heat while we were there – the rooms and windows are large with effective shutters and all the bedrooms were equipped with fans. It is perfect for a family holiday – plenty of space - and a lovely large garden with a generous pool, table tennis table and a vegetable garden with flowers and herbs which are available for guests to pick. The owners are very welcoming and helpful with great local tips for outings, shopping and eating. To crown it all, they are trained and excellent cooks who made a delicious welcome meal for us to heat up on our first night, and a fabulous birthday dinner which they not only cooked, but served and cleared away. Since we left, we have been trying to think of excuses to go back.

Alice & Jack September 2026

All the family (8 adults and 6 month old granddaughter) had a lovely week at La Chartreuse. Lots of space, lovely gardens and great pool. We enjoyed a fabulous meal prepared by Ben and Kate as we were celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary. We loved the terrace and long table for breakfasts and evening meals.

Mrs Helen Wells June 2025

La Chartreuse exceeded our expectations. The house was even better than the photos and the owners could not have been more helpful, friendly and full of local recommendations and information. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Had a fabulous holiday from start to finish. Simpson Travel could not of been more helpful, from finding me the perfect house to answering various queries during the booking procedures and checking in with us whilst on holiday. All the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Mrs Sheridan McKay May 2025
