Waterfront dining in Agios Nikolaos

It seems like every Greek island has at least one Agios Nikolaos! This one is definitely one to visit though. Just a short drive south of Stoupa – or a pleasant stroll along the coastal path – the harbour village of Agios Nikolaos is one of the area's best places to enjoy a meal by the sea. The waterfront is lined with tavernas and restaurants serving everything from classic Greek meze to more contemporary interpretations of regional dishes. Fresh seafood is a highlight, with many menus featuring the day's catch alongside local produce and traditional specialities.

E-bike trip to Trachila

Cycling is a great way to experience the coastline, and electric bikes make the route accessible for most riders. Starting near Agios Dimitrios, follow the coastal road south towards the small village of Trachila. The route passes dramatic cliffs, sea caves and serene views across the Messinian Gulf before reaching the quiet fishing settlement at the end of the road. Although the scenery is spectacular, the road itself is relatively wide and flat, and even if you haven’t been on a bike for years, e-bikes make light work of the short inclines.

Kardamyli and the home of Patrick Leigh Fermor

Near Kardamyli is the former home of British writer, soldier and scholar Patrick Leigh Fermor, one of the twentieth century's most celebrated travel authors. The house, where he lived for many years, can be visited by prior arrangement. To find out more about the history and culture of the region, his classic account called simply The Mani is a good read either before or during your holiday in the Peloponnese. Kardamyli is also worth a visit – it’s one main street has several interesting little shops and cafes, and the main square is a nice spot to sit and watch the world go about its business for a while.

Greek night in a local village

The village of Pigi hosts a popular weekly Greek evening that attracts both local residents and visitors. Come hungry to enjoy generous servings of meze, freshly grilled meat and fish while listening to live music and watching traditional Greek dancing, with lots of encouragement to join in if you feel like it. A fun way to experience local hospitality and village life.

Fresh fish in Kitries

Situated near Kalamata, the small fishing village of Kitries is well known for its waterside seafood tavernas. The harbour remains an active fishing port, and the relaxed setting makes it an excellent place to enjoy freshly prepared fish overlooking the sea. After lunch, spend some time on the village's small beach or take in the peaceful atmosphere of this traditional coastal community.

The mountains of Taygetos

This 100-km range of limestone mountains offers a beautifully scenic contrast to the coast, and the highest peak in the Peloponnese. The roads are winding yet well maintained so a relatively easy drive, and you’ll pass through mountain villages and roadside stalls selling locally produced honey, herbs and other regional products. In the village of Exohori, the Museum of Mani Life provides an insight into the customs, traditions and everyday history of this distinctive part of Greece.

Go deep into the Diros Caves

Approximately one hour south of Agios Nikolaos, the Diros Caves are among the Peloponnese's most remarkable natural attractions. Archaeological discoveries indicate that the caves were inhabited in prehistoric times, making them one of Greece's earliest known settlement sites. Today you can explore much of the cave system by boat, gliding across an underground lake beneath impressive limestone formations. Bonus: the caves stay cool even on the hottest day, providing welcome respite in the heat of summer.

Go wild in the Mani

The southern Mani Peninsula is known for its rugged scenery, stone tower villages and dramatic coastline. A drive through the region feels like a real off-the-beaten-track adventure, taking in steep cliffs, secluded coves and historic settlements that have retained much of their traditional character. Gerolimenas and Limeni are both excellent places to stop for lunch or a swim in clear waters, and it’s common to spot loggerhead turtles in the bay at both villages.

Shop local at Kalamata Farmers' Market

For a taste of everyday local life, visit Kalamata's farmers' market, held every Wednesday and Saturday. Stalls are filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables, olives, herbs, cheeses and other regional produce, making it a favourite destination for food lovers. The market is also an excellent place for photography thanks to its colourful displays, and it combines easily with a walk through Kalamata's atmospheric Old Town, where independent shops, cafés and historic buildings are all within easy reach.
