Green and gold hillsides are laid out in every direction from this simple yet charming home. The villa is surrounded by beautiful private gated grounds with a pool tucked into a small olive grove; high summer days will see you heading for the impressive 14m x 7m private swimming pool or sitting in the shade on one of the three covered terraces, iPad, novel or guidebook in hand as you contemplate a day of exploration or well-deserved relaxation. If you visit in the glorious golden days of autumn, the cosy beamed living room with open fire is the perfect place to unwind in the evenings and revisit the day’s adventures over a glass of fine local wine.

Umbria is sometimes regarded as Tuscany’s quieter cousin, full of off-the-beaten-track gems and a good choice for those who feel they have ‘done’ Tuscany and are looking for an equally beautiful alternative. The proliferation of winding, gravel roads or 'strade bianche' means there's no option but to slow down enjoy the view, but for those with the patience to tackle them, Villa Donatella is an enchanting base to enjoy the cuisine, culture and character of Umbria.

The local area

The nearest town is Umbertide, 13km away, which dates back to pre-Roman times and deserves at least half a day to explore its castle, museum and several churches. A little further is the 16th-century Citta di Castello, nestled on the banks of the Tiber in all its Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance splendour.

Gubbio, 42km away, has been described as one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Italy; an appealing mix of restaurants and bars with impressive historic buildings such as the Palazzo dei Consoli and Palazzo Pretorio. The walled city of Perugia lies 45km to the south, home to the Umbrian National gallery and a vibrant place to visit year round thanks to its two universities. For a complete change of scene and pace, Lake Trasimeno is around 30km from the villa and a popular spot for boat trips and bird watching.

Carolyn Mola, June 2023

This was our third time in this beautiful house! We fell in love with it and very time we are planning our summer holiday we end up booking this villa over and over again. The scenery, the culinary treats, the quietness and above all the kindness of the region are all reasons to come back next year again! A special thank you to Monica who was even more helpful than ever before! See you next year.

The Hunfeld family, July 2019

Our second visit, it was fantastic and even better than last year. We stayed almost exclusively at the villa as we enjoyed its quietness (except for the cicadas!), calmness and views. Occasional visit to the wonderful town of Umbertide for provisions and an evening meal was again meeting all we wanted. We had wonderful weather, a beautiful thunderstorm to enjoy and on one of our walks disturbed a group of wild boar grazing in the surrounding fields. We heard deer but no sightings this year. A wonderful location, an excellent welcome pack and big thank you to Monica. We will be back.

Hala & Mike, June 2019

We thank Monica for the nice welcome and the great basket. She regularly asked if everything was ok. If there was a problem, she would immediately offer a solution. The gardener was very friendly and took care of the pool and the flowers. We had a nice holiday in a very beautiful and clean house in amazing surroundings.

Wilfried, Alexandra, Luc & Mia, May 2019

We had a fabulous week in amazing Villa Donatella. No property could be better equipped and as for the welcome pack… Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio are all well worth a visit. The cable car at Gubbio is an experience. We are not sure any other villa could match this one. Thank you to Monica for a lovely stay.

Rosalie, Gavin, Ellie & Tilly, August 2018

We arrived having completed a road trip of Italy and ready for a week of doing nothing but relaxing. Villa Donatella is the perfect place. We spent most of our week at the villa – the children loved the pool. The villa has everything you need and we loved the isolation. The welcome pack was amazing – thank you. We went to the market on Wednesday. A visit to Lake Trasimeno and Castiglion is a must.

Helen, Frazer, Tristan and Siân, July 2018

Who could ask for more? Villa Donatella is beautiful, quiet and peaceful with fantastic views. Nooks and crannies to explore and an excellent pool. Coffee and breakfast on the upper floor balcony, lunch on the downstairs terrace and relax by the pool. And then, if you want to explore outside, Perugia and Umbria offer you the real Italy.

Hala F Soegaard, July 2018

It's been amazing – we've loved Umbria – what a fantastic part of this lovely country. All of the hilltop towns were beautiful – enjoyed them. We've been spoiled in this fantastic villa – it's better than the pictures suggest – stunning views, rustic authentic stone. The welcome basket on arrival was a lovely touch. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

The McDonnels, August 2017

This was a perfect holiday (helped also by the weather). The house is furnished and equipped to a very high standard with ample comfortable seating inside and out. The grounds are lovely, mostly olive trees with plenty of wildlife (at least one hare, hedgehogs, bats and a variety of birds) but thankfully very few insects. The mown path around the perimeter of the grounds provided pleasant gentle exercise (15-20 minute walk) and the swimming pool was excellent – no real need to go out except for shopping. The owner and staff were very helpful – we arrived a couple of hours early and there was no problem getting into the property. The wi-fi was also excellent. We would certainly come again and would recommend it to others.

Olive groves and vineyards, forests and flowers – there’s much to love about the abundant natural beauty of Umbria, and plenty of walking trails to help you explore it. The two most high-profile towns, Assisi and Perugia, have spiritual and cultural gravitas in equal measures, the former the erstwhile home of St Francis, who built his famous monastery there. And after a day of contemplation, in churches, galleries, museums and nature, the ‘green heart of Italy‘ will reward you with a generous feast and a glass or two of its famous wine.
