This pretty mountain village is located just above Kalkan Bay, at an altitude of 400 metres, with spectacular views towards the bay. It is a place of bucolic tranquillity, rustic architecture and the dramatic backdrop of the Taurus Mountains – and to holiday in Islamlar is to experience a way of life truly unchanged in centuries.
It still has its old tea-house, a bakery where flour is ground by mill-stones, and shepherds who herd their sheep between the olive trees and vineyards. Even the mulberry groves are a vestige of the flourishing silk trade plied by the local Greeks and Turks during the Ottoman Empire. Stay here in the quaint and contemporary Islamlar villas and experience its local trout restaurants and village life.
An Islamlar holiday for the best of both worlds
Clichés may legitimately abound here, because luxury Islamlar holidays really do offer the best of both worlds: a rural retreat in the fresh breeze of the lofty hillsides; but also the draw of Kalkan, a short drive down, with its beach clubs, colourful waterfront and diverse heritage. The protected beach of Patara – its fine sands a home to the Caretta caretta turtle – and the hub of Fethiye are also within easy reach.
There are plenty of walking paths around the village including the Lycian Way, and the cooler mountain air makes for a more pleasant experience.
Ultimately, however, holidays here are first and foremost about... Islamlar, this unsung gem on the Turquoise Coast.
