Efi's Cottage Greece, Kefalonia

This charming, pastel-painted waterfront cottage is a rare find and a delightfully romantic property in the prettiest part of Kefalonia. In traditional style, the front door leads straight into the bedroom and from there stairs lead down via the small kitchen to a marvellous terrace from which steps descend to the sea. From this magical spot all the pleasures of dining, sunbathing, reading and enjoying the changing seascape, can be enjoyed all day long. The attractive harbour of Fiskardo, with its beautiful old houses and rather stylish shops and restaurants, is just a 15 minute stroll away and Foki beach, a curve of pebbles and the natural shade of olive and cypress trees, is closer still. A boat can be hired from Fiskardo to explore the many tiny coves along this coastline.

  • Lovely first week of the season. Breezy on the terrace. Mrs Booth - May 2014
  • A lovely two weeks with the cottage living up to our expectations in such an amazing position. Good weather apart from our two days of thunderstorms, rain and wind at the end of the first week. This dislodged the steps into the sea again which have now been repaired but need care when used. We are walkers and did five short walks: - Round to the lighthouse and back via Basilica. - Assos which was lovely. Climb on the wide zig-zag to the entry gate then turn left down to derelict buildings. If you go left when the buildings are just below on the right you come to another gate and walk back to the village along a cliff path. An easy path but not for those who suffer from vertigo. - Up to the deserted village and on to Antipata. From there a road on the right just past the church comes down to the main road into Fiskardo above Emblissi Beach. - Forest walk from Emblissi Beach. We missed the start of this and ended up walking to the headland which is covered in cairns. The proper path climbs left uphill from behind the drinks cabin. Eventually it comes to a little beach and a path goes back up to the main road. - Park at Matsoukata and walk up to Katsarata. Road walk, but spectacular views and some amazing villas. We tried various beaches but always seemed to end up at Foki just down the road. Some remarkable boats have anchored opposite the cottage – at the moment there is one with a helicopter on deck! Thanks to Wendy who has been most kind and helpful. And to the lady who has kept the cottage so clean although we haven’t seen her. We hope the next visitors will enjoy the cottage as much as we have. Mr Hardiman - September 2012
  • Having just spent 2 weeks in Skala with 40 family and friends that all came to Kefalonia for our wedding in Assos on 31 August, we were looking for rest and relaxation on our honeymoon week in Efi’s Cottage and that is exactly what we got! If you have a car we would recommend a trip to Assos, it is such a beautiful place. We have spent a lot of this week on the terrace of Efi’s Cottage relaxing, swimming in the beautiful sea and watching the huger yachts go in and out of the harbour. A pair of binoculars would have come in handy. We hired out a 30hp speed boat for the day (€130 including petrol). We went over to Polis Bay, Ithaca. We took a trip to Agia Jerusalem Beach which is a lot of fun. Get one of the inflatable beds. We also made use of the BBQ on the terrace a couple of evenings and bought meat from the large supermarket in town – there is a meat counter at the back. Overall a wonderful week and a perfect honeymoon. Thank you to Wendy for all the useful information given to us, it really helped us make the most of our week. Ms Kilner - September 2012
  • Great week yacht watching from the terrace! Snorkelling is excellent from the steps, take the bread and watch all the fish come really close. Look for octopus and starfish. Otherwise all Wendy’s info is excellent, can’t add anything else.....thanks very much Wendy! Mrs Lewith - August 2012
  • A wonderful week in Efi’s Cottage. Our top 3 highlights: - The terrace, it felt like our own spot of paradise for the week, watching the world go by with the sea at the end of the garden (so to speak). - It felt like all the best bits of Fiskardo were here, to such an extent we just chilled out and took it all in. If it was out of walking distance we didn’t do it. The harbour was great. Foki Beach was lovely, the scuba diving off the steps here was great. All in all an excellent week, relaxing and catching up on sleep! Wendy was excellent. We hope to be back. Mr Balch - August 2012
  • Had a fabulous week on this beautiful island. Particularly enjoyed Emblissi Beach, which is like a paradise with turquoise waters and tiered rocks where you can lay and relax. A fair walk from Fiskardo but worth the effort in our opinion. Agia Jerusalem bay was also a good beach with lovely facilities. Foki Beach is also very lovely and a very short walk away. Lasting memories of Kefalonia will be the fine cypress covered mountains leading all the way down to the beautiful beaches. Enjoy. Mr Ttofias - August 2012
  • A wonderful week at Efi’s Cottage. The location and views are breathtaking – all we could wish for. We rented a boat and took a packed lunch and spent a fantastic day on the water, travelling as far as the fish farm. Where we anchored at a small cove, just by ourselves – bliss. Our thanks to Wendy (Simpson Rep) for all the useful information. All in all this holiday has fully lived up to our expectations. Mrs Crosland - July 2012
  • What a wonderful week, Kefalonia is stunning and Efi’s Cottage is such a beautiful base to stay. You won’t find many views to rival this one right here. Fiskardo is by far the loudest place we have seen, although rivalled by Assos. All the reviews you will read here are pretty accurate so take heed. We would recommend you go to Sami to see the caves. The stalactites are amazing and at the other cave you have an amazing boat ride into the clear blue water. Favourites: - Beach – Agia Jerusalem. Not too far away and nice to have the floats on the beach. - View – Everywhere you look the scenery is beautiful. Definitely worth a walk to the lighthouse. We found Myrtos Beach highly overrated. All the beaches are rocky so buy yourself some shoes you can swim in. Most of all....enjoy. Mr Rushdie - July 2012
  • Had a fantastic 2 weeks at Efi’s Cottage. Very hot and humid when we arrived so took a few days to acclimatise and have since surrendered to a slower pace of life! Lots of info and good tips in this book, not to mention Wendy who will point you in the right directions whatever your tastes. A few things we really enjoyed: - Loved Agia Jerusalem Beach – not the prettiest – but sun loungers/umbrellas for hire. You can also hire a kayak if you fancy seeing what’s in the next bay. Other good beaches: - Emblissi and Dafnoudi – although rocky for lying on. Further a field Myrtos – sun beds and brollies for hire. Have fun making your own discoveries – we did! Mrs Pearce - July 2012
  • Our first time in Kefalonia, had a great but very hot week (max 35-36 degrees) Top tip listen and take note of Wendy’s advice - it is tip top. Many Thanks to Wendy, sorry we kept missing you. Best day we had, hire a boat for the day, go to Polis Bay on Ithaca and walk to the village up the hill about 20 minutes. If swimming after dark, watch out for jelly fish. We had a great week, and will be back! Mr Matthews - July 2012
  • Could not wish for a more fantastic setting with amazing views. Places visited: - Foki Beach – easy walk, great spot. - Assos – really pretty, well worth the drive. - Dafnoudi Beach – beautiful cove, a few more fish when snorkelling than most places. - Kaminia Beach – two lovely coves but quite a long hike to get there. Mr Lily - June 2012
  • Thanks for an excellent holiday. Please tell Wendy that we have told you how good she was. Mr Lily - June 2012
  • We have had a lovely restful week at Efi’s Cottage. The weather has been perfect – warm and sunny most days with a slight breeze. Having visited the main sights in Kefalonia back in 2010 we spent the week relaxing on the beautiful terrace and swimming in the evenings at Foki Beach. We had supper a couple of nights in Fiskardo watching the boats go by. As we’re expecting a baby we missed a boat trip this year. However in previous visit it is well worth doing as you can explore the island, and find lots of deserted beaches. Enjoy :) Mr Whittall - June 2012
  • We’ve been ‘busy doing nothing’ all week and enjoying it! It’s been a very restful holiday. The weather was very wild and windy at the beginning of the week so we used this time for walking. We walked to the deserted village and then made our way to Emblissi Beach – good but not as pretty as Foki. The walk to the lighthouse and Basilica is beautiful – try it before it gets too hot in the day. All the restaurants have been good. We’ve had a great time and will be back. Enjoy Mr Davey - May 2012
  • We had a wonderful week, even with the wind and occasional burst of rain! We very much appreciated the little food hamper, and enjoyed breakfast on the veranda, saving our pennies for lunch and evening meals out and about. As the weather was temperamental, we were very lucky to go out on a boat trip from the harbour. The water was a bit nippy but wet suits were provided and once in, snorkelling was fantastic, especially the shipwrecks! Jamie is very knowledgeable, well worth the money! We also did a trip on the large ferry across to Lefkas for a few hours (€8pp one way). As you get off the ferry, the old town is much nicer than the newer bit around the bay. There were some decent shops, and on the trip over we saw dolphins from the ferry which made my day! You can get the ferry at 10am each day at the far end of the harbour. Today our last day :( we hired one of the small motor boats and also went over to Polis Bay on Ithaca as the previous couple had. All in all a lovely break with plenty of relaxing on our own veranda by the sea. Only got a chance to get in the sea from here today as it has been a bit choppy and these steps are not the easiest. Have been swimming though, Foki Beach and today off the hire boat – best advice is to buy a pair of swim shoes. Makes it a lot easier to negotiate the shingle and pebbles. Thanks to all at Simpson, Wendy and Efi for this spot by the sea. Enjoy. Mrs Field - May 2012
  • Had a fantastic time at the cottage despite the weather being a bit temperamental (a bit like the UK) sun/very windy/cloud/rain but we still had a great time. Will echo some of the comments already made: - Trip to Agia Jerusalem good, planned to kayak but too windy. - A trip to Assos is good (if not too hot, a 40 minute climb/walk to castle ruins gives a great view) - Wendy the rep is very helpful and we knew that if a problem arose she would help us out. Mrs Popplestone - May 2012
  • First of 2012 season and weather has been fantastic! Efi’s Cottage bliss, will miss sitting watching boats go past and walk into Fiskardo for coffee. Our trip advisor – If you have a car, Agia Jerusalem Beach. Suspect the beach is very busy and noisy later in the season. Alaties Beach nearby is lovely and very tiny. Myrtos Beach is pretty and worth going over to Agia Efimia, small harbour. Hired a boat and went over to Polis Bay – excellent. Ate in Fiskardo most nights, didn’t have a bad meal anywhere. Thank you Wendy for looking after us so well, you are full of information. We were impressed that the airport greeter was called ‘Greta’ – now that is what I call attention to detail! This was a real chill out break for us – Efi’s is a great pitch – no question. Mrs Bescoby - May 2012
  • Holiday was fantastic, everything as stated on the web. The bathroom in the property was rather small and basic but I think you are aware of this. I usually book everything myself but will be definitely using you again. Many thanks! Mrs Bescoby - May 2012

If you are flying on our British Airways charter service from London to Corfu you are permitted to carry one piece of checked luggage per person up to 23kg. One piece of hand baggage is permitted up to 10kg (maximum dimensions 56cm x 45cm x 25cm).

Infants are permitted a 10kg checked bag allowance plus a fully collapsible pushchair, a car seat and one piece of hand luggage for items required in the flight (subject to security restrictions).
Any excess baggage will be charged at the airport. As this is a BA charter service, BA miles cannot be accrued or earned on this flight, nor can BA Executive Club members access the airport lounge.
If you are flying with Easyjet you are permitted to carry one piece of checked luggage per person (excluding infants) up to 20kg. One piece of hand baggage is permitted measuring a maximum 56 x 45 x 25cm (including wheels, pockets and handles) which you must be able to place and retrieve safely in the overhead lockers without assistance.
If you are flying with any other airline, please check the airline’s website for details.
It is common for airlines to change their restrictions on luggage weight and the number of items so, before travelling, we recommend you check the airline’s website for the latest information.

Instead of full meals, BA now operate a ‘buy on board’ service offering sandwiches, snacks and drinks in conjunction with Marks & Spencer. Only card payments are accepted and choice may be limited, so you might find it easier to take food and drink onto the plane with you. Easyjet offers a pay on board snack service.

Some airlines offer passengers the opportunity of pre-booking guaranteed seats together at a pre-paid supplement (seats may be situated either side of an aisle) and some offer seating with extra legroom for a reasonable supplement. Availability and supplements can be advised at the time of booking.

You will usually need a certificate of fitness to fly if you are more than 28 weeks pregnant. Most airlines will not allow you to fly if you are more than 32 weeks pregnant. Please refer to the airline’s website for details of their policy.

Most countries require that the airline take additional information from each passenger such as full name, date and place of birth, passport number, country of issue and expiry date. You will need to provide this information at the time of booking or, at the very latest, prior to release of your travel documents. You are able to complete the details online via Manage My Booking or call a member of our Pre-Departure team.

The name shown on the itinerary must exactly match the name of the passenger travelling as it appears in his/her passport (first full name and surname). If not, you may be refused boarding. Once your flights have been booked, it is not usually possible to make name changes without incurring substantial charges. If there are any errors on your invoice or itinerary, please inform us immediately.

In the event of a flight delay, whenever possible we will ensure that the airline/operator communicates the reasons for and extent of any delay and implements appropriate standards of welfare provision. EU carriers should also comply with EU Regulation 261/2004 in the event of delays, cancellations or denied boarding and guidance is provided on the CAA’s website www.caa.co.uk

Most of our holidays include an air-conditioned hire car, to be collected from and returned to the airport (or port where applicable). The category of car included in the basic holiday price will vary according to the number of people in your party. We do not consider infants as part of the total party size. The cars we have included offer comfortable seating for the size of party travelling, however, we do ask you to take into account the size of the boot space for your luggage if any infants are in your party, and the number of child and baby seats required. You may wish to upgrade your car to give you extra comfort and space. Availability and supplements for upgrading will be advised at the time of booking. For transporting extra luggage it is also possible to pre-book a taxi at additional cost.

The types of cars listed are only examples of car models in each category. We cannot guarantee that you will receive a specific make or model.  All cars in Greece are 5 door.

  • Any damage, loss, accident, theft, attempted theft, etc. caused by your own negligence, for example, driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful driving, driving off-road, using wrong type of fuel, unlocked doors, apparent personal effects, etc.

The car hire agents will require you to lodge a credit card deposit when you collect your car. No money will be taken if you return the undamaged car at the correct time with the correct amount of fuel and not requiring cleaning.

Child and baby seats (forward facing seats only are available) can be provided if booked at least 2 weeks prior to your departure and are charged at £2 per day. Please remember to specify the age of the child. Local car hire and Simpson Travel staff are not authorised to install the child seats and as style and installation may differ to those in the UK, you may prefer to bring your own child seat for your own peace of mind.

Please refer to the information at the top of the page for details of the transfers included in the cost of your holiday. Taxis are licensed and insured to carry up to 4 passengers. Therefore, if there are 4 passengers and an infant then 2 taxis are needed and we will provide you with a separate quotation. If you are travelling with young children or babies, child seats are not provided for any vehicles used for transfers. For your own peace of mind, we recommend that you bring your own although there is no guarantee that local taxi companies will allow the use of child seats. Please note that the transfer times included in our accommodation details are approximate estimates only and do not include any waiting time.

Although we pre-arrange and book your ferry crossings in advance, poor weather or ferry cancellations may disrupt the schedules. In most cases, when you arrive at the port you will have to wait a certain amount of time for your onward boat transfer. If your flight experiences delays and you miss your pre-booked boat transfer, we will then book you onto the next available boat. If you miss the last ferry due to a flight delay or cancellation due to poor weather, it may be necessary for you to overnight at the port and then take the ferry the following morning.

Air-conditioning and heating
We have indicated in the property descriptions which accommodation has air-conditioning included in the holiday price. Heating is available in some of our properties during the low season weeks, which is normally included in the holiday price.

Animals and wildlife
As in all rural communities, indigenous animals are an essential part of the way of life. The braying of a donkey, crow of a cockerel or the barking of a dog is not a complaint that receives much sympathy from the locals! Care should be taken to minimise the presence of insects and animals in your accommodation. Keep surfaces clean, dispose of refuse regularly and ensure that food is not left uncovered. Cats and dogs are often resident where an owner or manager lives on the property. If you are allergic to cats and/or dogs please ensure that you check the suitability of your chosen accommodation with us prior to confirming your booking.

We have specified if a barbecue is available at your accommodation. Please note that often in summer, due to the hot weather, use of your barbecue may not be allowed and/or strict rules for its use may apply. The local or national government reserves the right to introduce new rulings at any time, often with little prior notice, prohibiting the use of barbecues to reduce the risk of fires. Where a barbecue is not provided, it is usually because the surroundings are considered a fire risk or inappropriate for the use of barbecues.

Beach/pool towels
We provide Simpson Travel beach/pool towels in all our self-catering properties and Simpson Hotels, and these are normally laundered weekly.

Please note that a double bed could be two single beds placed together. Double beds usually measure 140cm x 190cm and single beds 80/90cm x 190cm. If you are booking a hotel room, please let us know your room preference (double or twin). Although we will make every effort to convey your request to the hotel, we cannot guarantee your preference will be available.

Check-in and check-out
You will usually be able to occupy your villa, apartment or hotel after 4pm and you must vacate it on the day of departure by 10am and 9:30am in western Crete.

Self-catering accommodation is cleaned a minimum of twice a week (including arrival day) and some accommodation may be cleaned more often. Cleaning usually consists of a sweep, mop, bathroom and kitchen tidy up.  (N.B. Simpson Secret, Anti Paxos is cleaned once a week on changeover day.)

Distances and timings
Please note that all walking and driving times stated are approximate estimates only. Transfer times are also approximate estimates only and do not include any waiting time.

Hotel bookings with half-board include dinner, which is usually a fixed menu with or without a choice of dishes. In some hotels, you may take your half-board meal at lunchtime.

Health and safety
Simpson Travel is committed to raising the standards of health and safety throughout all our destinations. Our guests’ safety and wellbeing is of the highest importance to us. However, please note that since many of our properties are private homes, it is not always possible to meet the same exacting standards as in the UK. In your accommodation we will provide any necessary health and safety information. We ask you to familiarise yourself with this information and the property on arrival, particularly when travelling with children, and to raise any concerns with your local representative.

In some properties a baby monitor has been provided and to the best of our knowledge it is operating correctly but it is vital that you check regularly that the device is operating to your satisfaction. We strongly advise against relying on the baby monitor in case of malfunction. Simpson Travel cannot be held liable for any malfunction of the baby monitor and the use of the device is entirely at your own risk.

Internet access and connection
If a property offers wifi or internet access, the type of connection may vary. Additionally, the signal could be intermittent at times and may not be available in all areas of the property. There may be a charge for internet use in some properties.

Linen and laundry
Bed and bathroom linen is provided and usually laundered twice weekly. For your convenience some of our properties have a washing machine.

Noise and building works
Traffic, farm work, roadwork, animals and other sounds form part of everyday life, however, what constitutes ‘noise’ to one person may not be a problem for another. Please let us know if you have any special needs regarding this. Occasionally, building work is unavoidable as we do not control such work and may not know about it in advance. Whenever possible, we will notify you of any work that we believe may affect your holiday.

Only guests named on your invoice are entitled to occupy the accommodation.

Throughout Greece, especially in the older houses, the plumbing system is not designed to have items flushed down the lavatory. Where necessary, bins are provided in all bathrooms.

Satellite television
We cannot guarantee that a full selection of satellite channels will be available. Channels in English may be very limited and these are often only CNN or BBC World.

Seasonal facilities
Some facilities are subject to weather conditions and the general season, for example swimming pools, restaurant terraces, pool bars, local restaurants, and they may be limited or unavailable at the beginning or end of the season. Please do not hesitate to check with us, should a particular facility be a necessity to you.

Security and cleaning deposits
For self-catering properties, we require you to lodge a security deposit against any breakages, damage, losses, extra cleaning or outstanding accounts, which you may have incurred during your stay and/or due to your negligence. This should be provided by credit or debit card at the time of booking by providing authorisation for us to deduct (within 14 days of your return home) any advised charges from your card. Most of our properties are the owners’ personal homes and repairs, replacements and extra cleaning can be very expensive, so we do ask you to take care in order to avoid incurring extra costs.

Swimming pools
Swimming pool details are given on our website. Pool dimensions are approximate only and, unless specified otherwise, pools are freshwater and unheated. In Paxos most pools are filled using ‘sweet water’, which is generally a mix of well water (with some salt content) and fresh water. Dates when pools are operational are subject to the prevailing weather conditions at the time of opening and closing and we cannot be held responsible if poor weather means the pool is opened later, or is closed earlier in the season.

Upon arrival at your accommodation, we kindly ask you to acquaint yourselves with the pool’s safety and hygiene rules. Very few pools have covers, fencing or life rings, so children must be supervised at all times. Some pools are ‘infinity pools’ which have an exposed pool edge with an unprotected drop. This maximises views and is an attractive feature of the pool. We recommend that children are supervised and that you do not sit, lean or walk on the unprotected edge.

Villa owners
Whilst the owners or staff of some properties may live on site and tend to the grounds, they are aware that you value your privacy, and will do their best not to intrude. We do ask you, however, to allow them reasonable access to the property so that they can maintain the grounds and keep them in good order.

Welcome Pack
We offer a welcome pack in all our self-catering accommodation consisting of a small selection of staple items and local produce. This usually includes the following complimentary items: coffee, tea bags, milk, bottled water, fruit juice, bread, butter/margarine, crisps, white wine, local beers, tonic, pasta, pasta sauce, yoghurt, honey, regional biscuits, washing powder, washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing-up sponge, salt and pepper, sugar, olive oil, vinegar, mixed herbs and toilet paper.

Our choice of Greek properties is as diverse as the islands themselves, ranging from simple seaside charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide.

We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal. To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Grading Criteria:

Position, view, serenity, privacy

Space, style, furnishings and interiors

Property enhancements

Proximity to beach, restaurant and shops

For further clarification on Facilities, please view the 'Details' tab for each property or speak to one of our experienced sales consultants.
