A walled citadel on an outcrop of granite; cobbled streets of old houses and fishermen mending their nets by the harbour – Calvi has kept its ancient maritime character intact, while basking in contemporary cosmopolitan culture. Quai Landry, which links the yacht marina and the port, is populated by bustling cafés and piano-bars, and a holiday in Calvi will surely draw you into its world of music at some point – from jazz and folk, to international festivals and remote village fairs. Past the promenade, the setting is as lovely as ever: la Pinède, four miles of pine-backed bay and gently shelving beach, curving below the Balagne and its distant mountains.

Algajola, with its old castle on the water’s edge, and the lively port of Île Rousse, where sunsets make the offshore pink rocks blush to terracotta, are simply unforgettable. The little Trinichellu narrow-gauge railway connects the towns, rumbling on beyond the mountains.
