Mallorca

Mallorca is an island that has enjoyed something of a renaissance. Today it is a place of contrasts: there is hidden Mallorca where visitors shop in village markets, discover country restaurants or follow wild tracks under the peak of Puig Major. Then there is stylish Mallorca where guests can relax in elegant boutique hotels, luxurious villas or restored historic houses.

There are beautiful towns like old Sóller with its shady main square, and the glorious village of Deià, where the writer Robert Graves lies in a tiny churchyard overlooking the sea. Equally appealing are Valldemossa, with its dappled streets and Carthusian monastery, and the greens, blues and whites of old Pollença. The rocky coves of Cala d’Or are as pretty as anywhere on the island, whereas unspoiled and idyllic Fornalutx nestles in citrus groves. The capital, Palma, rejoices in tiled cafés, cloistered convents, Baroque mansions, marvellous shops, and its splendid cathedral.
