Sicily

Sicily is full of beguiling contrasts. The untamed west vies with the flawless Greek classicism of the east and every Mediterranean civilisation has passed by, bequeathing marvels fit for the gods and a rich gastronomic heritage.

Palermo has bustling markets and grand architecture. Sample fish couscous and the typically Sicilian atmosphere of  Palermo’s riviera. Erice is a medieval fairytale on a hilltop, and Marsala is the eponymous heart of wine country. Nature lovers can walk in Zingaro Nature Reserve and on the lovely sweeping sands of San Vito Lo Capo.

Along the coast, Cefalù has it all; fascinating alleys, an imposing square with its grand Norman Cathedral and a long stretch of golden beach.

The east has a bounty of antiquities, pretty countryside and gorgeous beaches. The UNESCO towns of Ragusa, Noto, Ispica and Modica are rich in Baroque architecture, just like the lovely isle of Ortigia, Siracusa’s gem. The island’s own active volcano, Mount Etna, smiles over Taormina, an elegant town blessed with sublime views and a remarkable Greek-Roman theatre.

Commanding a coastline of wild beaches in the South, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and strewn around the coast, Sicily’s enchanting islands might just tempt you away.
