Fiskardo has abundant charm and has succeeded in becoming one of the more gently sophisticated destinations in the Greek islands, while retaining its quintessential character as a fishing village. The horseshoe-shaped bay is guarded by a ruined Venetian lighthouse and pastel-coloured 18th Century houses with stone doorways, carved doors and small balconies festooned with flowers make an immediate visual impact.
The streets are picture-postcard yet the waterfront has a certain buzz about it, perhaps because boats are still Fiskardo’s main traffic; there is always something to watch. Some fashionable restaurants serve excellent food, yet menus still reflect their island roots, and there is a range of stylish shops alongside the traditional bakery and kafenion.
The hilly countryside around the Fiskardo peninsula is fertile and unspoiled, dotted with the occasional hamlet, so wonderful for walks, while the coastline is indented with small, quiet coves, often shaded by pine trees, which can be easily reached by car or by a boat trip from Fiskardo.
