Tenuta Mosè

Puglia, Italy

  • Romantic suites with sunken baths
  • Beautiful walled gardens
  • Small intimate restaurant
  • Gallipoli and beaches 15-minute drive
  • Lecce 45-minute drive

Puglia is a place with an astonishing and varied history that pre-dates all known civilisations. It hides its treasures well, within the ancient walls of its historic towns and villages, and despite boasting a vast 800km of coastline even the beaches reveal themselves slowly in Puglia. So Tenuta Mosè should come as no surprise. Yet within the walls of this hotel in the unspoilt Salento region of Southern Puglia, lies an extraordinary oasis of beauty and elegant sophistication that is simply breath-taking.

As a child, the host Adriano, spent joyous summers at his grandparents’ home close to Tenuta Mosè where he recalls a house full of light, a garden scented with citrus, and almonds dropping gently to the ground. Years later, he bought an old farming estate with distant views of his much-loved childhood retreat and in a labour of love lasting four years, has transformed it into an unashamedly romantic haven; where people, good food and the elegant art of conversation can flourish.

Adriano’s passion for the finer things in life is evident throughout Tenuta Mosè. Using lavish natural materials, Neo-classically inspired décor, and grand antique furnishings he has created a wonderfully palatial feel. Our ground floor suites, Desert Rose and Smereld Laurel continue in this vein, offering opulence and old-school glamour in abundance; with sumptuous beds, enormous sunken baths, frescoes on the walls and terraces lined with rosemary, sage and verbena. The first-floor suite, Maestrale, is equally luxurious but less ornate, with vaulted ceilings crafted from the local Carparo stone and outside on the terrace, its own private pool and seating area with distant views to the Ionian Sea.

The elegant restaurant at Tenuta Mosè is set in the orangery, overlooking the magnificent formal gardens and offers a timeless fine dining experience, serving beautifully presented local dishes with some inspired international influences. Breakfast is served here too, or on your terrace if you prefer.

Outside in the Italianate walled garden, symmetrical box hedging and stone pillars line the walkways to a central pergola adorned with delicately fragranced roses, a sensuous pleasure on your way to the majestic swimming pool beyond. There is also a lovely spa, with steam-room and covered terrace which can be made private for a treatment. And beyond the garden walls, are the citrus scents of Adriano’s childhood and he has established a vineyard and organic vegetable garden, providing wine and produce for use at the hotel.

Tenuta Mosè is the sort of place you may not wish to leave but it is well-placed, just 15 minutes from Gallipoli and the numerous beaches that lie along the Ionian coast, and the many highlights of Salento are all within an hour’s drive. The magnificent Castello Aragonese in Otranto and mystical Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas collide are both easily accessible by car but undoubtedly, the jewel in the crown of Puglia’s baroque period is magnificent Lecce, offering culture and cuisine to rival anywhere in Italy.

Tenuta Mosè is a place for dreamers, explorers and romantics. It can be booked alone, for a minimum of three nights, or combined with a stay in one of our hotels in Northern Puglia, allowing you the flexibility to discover as much or as little of this magical landscape as you choose.
