Our astonishingly situated Simpson Secret, tucked away beside the warm waters of the Libyan Sea, has a faraway, seductive beauty and a simple elegance that is utterly bewitching. Very little tourism has touched the remoter shores of Southern Crete and as you leave the productive agricultural landscape behind and drop down between the mountainous ridges towards the villa, a vast sweep of unspoilt sandy beach opens up before your eyes; with not another house in sight to share it.

In this secluded and mesmerising spot, Manolis and his wife Katerina have created a luxurious and sophisticated 12-bedroom retreat; large enough to host a lively house party for family and friends, yet intimate enough to offer a restful haven for smaller groups seeking an idyllic beach house retreat. Manolis came fishing here as a boy and the magic of these quiet waters left a lasting impression. It is easy to see why. Very little has changed along this magnificent coastline where the breeze whispers through the feathery leaves of the tamarisk trees as it has done for centuries. Eagles soar, herons dive and once a year, newly-hatched loggerhead turtles embark on their perilous journey out to sea  and some lucky few make their miraculous return.

The cleverly designed villa appears to melt into the wild and rugged hillside behind it; whilst stretching out in front, a spacious terrace with perfectly placed infinity pool, offers all the space and comfort you could wish for to sit and enjoy this blissful spot. Interiors are stylishly furnished and make use of beautiful natural materials, while modern twists reflect the owners’ contemporary taste. Picture windows in the spacious living and dining areas overlook the terrace and sea beyond, whilst upstairs the stunning views continue from a fabulous open-fronted terrace, complete with summer kitchen, barbecue and additional dining area for up to thirty.

The layout of the villa is particularly appealing. The various covered terraces and comfortable seating areas afford plenty of room to spread out or gather together as desired, and the bedrooms are cleverly arranged to allow the villa to adapt effortlessly to the differing needs of extended families or groups of friends travelling together. There are five doubles and three triples, all with en-suite bathrooms and a further two family-friendly suites each with a double, a triple and a shared bathroom. Providing comfortable beds and luxury linens, the spacious bedrooms offer simple pared-back chic with all but two sharing the magical views across the water.

To ensure a truly restorative getaway there is a daily housekeeper, and a chef is available on request. Katerina is happy to arrange for pre-ordered groceries and drinks to be delivered before and during your stay and she can also arrange boat trips, massage and a personal trainer, subject to availability. Down by the water, kayaks and paddle boards are standing by whenever you wish to take to the water and a further shaded-terrace with spacious barbecue area makes beachfront living an absolute joy.

There is a small selection of tavernas, shops and a medical centre a ten-minute drive away in Arvi; whilst 20-minutes west, the quaint fishing village of Keratokampos is a charming place for dinner by the water. And if you are keen to explore inland, the historic mountain village of Viannos is a half-hour drive away and walkers will enjoy the spectacular mountain trails near here. But our Simpson Secret is really a destination in itself and we suspect you’ll find it very difficult to leave. It is a place to be cast away and to hear the song of the sea; a place for children to play amongst the dunes and make up stories of distant lands. And for adults, it is a place to let your hair down, or put your feet up, away from the vagaries of everyday life. As Lord Byron said, “There is a rapture on the lonely shore”. Nowhere is it more true than here.

Our choice of Greek properties is as diverse as the islands themselves, ranging from simple seaside charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal. To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

A destination where tourism is not the local raison d’être, this is a place to relax unreservedly into a life by the sea. The landscape is rugged – mountains, gorges and rocky hillsides scattered with tiny villages and ancient ruins – but some of Crete’s finest beaches belong here too. Among them are spectacular Xerokambos and palm-fringed Vai, whilst Palekastro is one of Europe’s favourite windsurfing spots. And there are plenty of excellent waterfront tavernas where the passing of time is best marked by the waves rolling in nearby.

To base yourself in this idyllic destination, visit our collection of handpicked villas in and around Palekastro and the far east of Crete.
