The epitome of barefoot luxury, light-filled Villa la Gravière combines beach-chic and contemporary style, all offset by an exceptional location. Between Hossegor’s tranquil lake and a magnificent sand dune leading down to a soft, sandy beach, it’s perfect for families or couples travelling together and seeking something special from their place by the sea.

From the walkway above the pool with views across the dunes to the swimming pool itself, positioned for complete privacy from the outside world, every detail has been carefully considered. Each of the five bedrooms is en-suite and with the living area opening out onto a generous terrace, indoor and outdoor living become one, seamlessly. The owners, a family, fell in love with the area after numerous holidays here. They couldn’t find the perfect place to buy so they asked a local architect to design them one – and this is the impressive end result.

The local area

In an area with so much to explore, a car comes in handy, but it’s not essential. Hossegor’s saltwater lake alone offers child-friendly beaches, watersports, weekly markets and healthy brunches al fresco. It’s surrounded by six kilometres of sandy track that will take you through pine forests and past restaurants. You can even try fresh oysters in one of the lakeside shacks, washed down by a local sauvignon. Cycle or walk your way around and it won’t be long before you’re feeling like a local. And then there’s Hossegor itself, a surfing hot spot, bursting with shopping opportunities and foodie treats, and a magnet for style-conscious teens who can explore safely and easily on their own.

Or you can head towards the ocean and a choice of glorious beaches. The villa’s namesake, Gravière, is even closer than the lake. Spend a sunset tasting tapas in the seasonal restaurant at the top of the dunes and you’ll tap into the spirit of this uniquely lovely destination.

Days out

Bayonne, the ‘chocolate capital ‘of France and host to its largest festival, is around half an hour’s drive away, whilst Biarritz is just a little further on. Here, Belle Époque glamour sits alongside a vibrant shopping, eating and cultural scene, all the more appealing for its dramatic coastal location. The Basque villages in all their pristine uniformity offer an insight into the area’s rich cultural heritage, or visit St-Jean-de-Luz, pure beach heaven for families with a beautiful historic town behind. You can even hop across the border into Spain for some quality time in the atmospheric coastal town of Hondarrabia. Catch the ferry from Hendaye and enjoy a packed calendar of festivals and some excellent tapas restaurants.

For nature lovers, there’s abundant plant and wildlife to be discovered at the peaceful Marais d’Orx, a wetland reserve about 20 minutes away by car, with high-sided wooden walkways, perfectly safe for little ones. However, for older children, the Seignosse and Labenne-Océan waterparks are an excellent, adrenaline-fuelled alternative.

Our choice of French properties is diverse, ranging from simple charm to genuine luxury and style. Much of our portfolio is privately owned, and price alone is therefore not a universal guide. We contract all our accommodation in person, and each property has its individual appeal.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

Once entirely marshland, this region is now a natural playground of sand dunes and beaches, pine forests and picturesque lakes, where walking and cycling are the most pleasurable ways of getting around. An idyllic meeting of France and California with truly spectacular waves and wide-ranging cuisine, upmarket Hossegor thrives on a surfing culture of stylish, laid-back living. However, in authentic Capbreton next door, and many of the towns and villages no more than an hour away, the historical roots go deeper and there’s much to explore.
