Downtime means different things to all of us, but the owners of La Canopée have thought of just about everything you could possibly want from a holiday villa; the house faces south for day-long sunshine and delightful mountain views, but if pool lounging is not your pleasure, there’s table football, billiards, table tennis, a sauna and even a piano to keep you entertained. For a change of pace, it’s just a ten-minute drive to Milady beach and the heart of Biarritz, with its tempting shops, grand architecture, wide choice of restaurants and unique, surf-chic atmosphere. A small stretch of the autoroute is visible from the terrace (about 500 metres away), but this slight background noise should in no way detract from your enjoyment of this very special villa.

The local area

The villa sits in the heart of a quiet, wooded district on the outskirts of Biarritz, the most famous seaside town on France's Atlantic coast. You'll find a bakery within 800 metres for oven-fresh baguettes and for more lofty dining, there's a Michelin star restaurant just a 15-minute stroll away. Historic Biarritz offers an eclectic combination of sophistication, elegance and surf culture, blessed with magnificent beaches and outstanding golf and spa facilities, plus plenty of family attractions. Museums dedicated to chocolate and to the sea are a hit with younger visitors, whilst the Biarritz walking tours offered by local residents give an insider view on all the many things to see and do here. For golfers, the Biarritz pass is a sensible investment, giving access to Arcangues, Bayonne, Biarritz, Ilbarritz, Moliets and Seignosse courses. For a romantic pre or post-dinner stroll, we recommend the dramatic Rocher de la Vièrge walkway at Biarritz Vieux Port.

Days out

If you manage to exhaust the many options in Biarritz, nearby St-Jean-de-Luz is a fishing-port-turned-holiday-town, known as the gourmet centre for Basque cuisine, with a rich cultural calendar, stylish shops and lovely beaches. A day tour of the Basque villages such as Ascain, Ainhoa, Sare and Espelette makes for a pleasing contrast to the coast; for something different again, don’t miss a trip into Spain and the old town of Hondarrabia or the celebrated cities of San Sebastian, Pamplona and Bilbao, home to the famous Guggenheim museum. Hendaye beach beckons with all manner of watersports and a thalassotherapy spa. For a more typically Basque experience, take a wander around the old town to sample pintxos or perhaps catch a lively game of pelota. Bayonne, capital of the Pays Basque, sits quietly under the tourist radar but rewards visitors with narrow medieval streets and a fine Gothic cathedral, not to mention of course its eponymous jambon. Some of southern Europe’s most majestic mountains are accessible in the Pyrénées National Park, and for gentler walking terrain, coastal paths connect from Bidart through Guéthary and St-Jean-de-Luz, and as far as Hendaye on the Spanish border.
