Dordogne barn conversions are the classics of the French holiday home world, but this beautiful country retreat is a definite cut above the norm, offering a charming and rather romantic base for food and wine lovers in the tranquil grounds of the historic Guillaume Blanc estate.

Whilst the estate may be centuries old, La Maison du Chevrier is a thoroughly contemporary conversion both in style and execution. Its creative British owners adopted a reclaim-recycle-reuse approach to the project, combing the local markets and brocantes for pre-loved treasures that add warmth, character and originality. Underpinning this rustic-chic mix is a top-spec renovation, complete with two elegant en suite bedrooms and delightful vineyard views. It’s an idyllic place to unwind with your favourite holiday reads or latest box-set, and once the house has worked its relaxing magic and you feel ready to explore, you’re perfectly placed for visiting some of France’s best-known foodie hotspots including medieval Sarlat, the bastide town of Eymet and of course the world-famous vineyards of Bergerac and St Emilion. And if you’re not in the mood for touring, there’s always your own private sun terrace or the estate’s pristine lap pool to enjoy without having to go anywhere at all.

Local area
Maison Guillaume Blanc estate is set in 3 acres of parkland. Close by is Sainte Foy la Grande (4km), a must for gourmets and shoppers as its market rates in the top ten in all of France. This is also where you can find all the shops, bars and restaurants you need to stock up or eat out. Strike out in pretty much any direction and you'll find familiar foodie names such as Monbazillac (20km), Bergerac (25km) and Périgueux (70km), interspersed with gorgeously photogenic villages and some of the Dordogne's finest bastide towns including Eymet (25km). The whole area is a wonderful natural playground if you're feeling active, with endless walks, mountain bike trails and a canoeing centre at Sainte Foy la Grande. There's also a championship golf course, Chateau des Vigiers, just 5 km away.

To help you make the right choice based on your own priorities, we have devised a simple grading guide to be considered in conjunction with each individual property description, awarding up to a maximum of five stars for the below categories.

From the Dordogne’s forest-covered hillsides to the undulating countryside of Lot-et-Garonne, these fertile landscapes have long played their part in human history – the famous Lascaux cave paintings testify to that. For a taste of spectacular coastline on your holiday, head to Charente-Maritime or find a lakeside beach that’s perfect for a picnic – this region is known for its abundant food and excellent wines. Choose a restaurant in an ancient village square and enjoy the sense of history repeated.
