Holidays to Andalucía & Los Pueblos Blancos

All the signature images of Spain – flamenco dancers and torreadors, fiestas and sherry, Don Juan and Carmen – are linked with this huge southern province.

It embraces both the magnificent snowcapped Sierra Nevada and a sun-baked coast that claims, with justification, to have some of the best beaches in Europe; particularly some of the glorious swathes of golden sand on the Costa de la Luz, the aptly named ‘Coast of Light’.

Picture great green and gold sweeps of vines and olive groves. Or towering hills topped by the Pueblos Blancos, the stunningly pretty white Moorish towns and villages where things crack along at a snail’s pace compared with the whirl of the coast.

Think of the fertile valleys of Las Alpujarras, or the Grazalema Natural Park, full of awesome ravines, rock formations and wildflowers or the terrain that surrounds the breathtaking El Chorro Gorge. This wilder beauty offers sublime walking country – here a mosaic of lemon, orange and olive groves, crops of wheat and cattle meadows cover the valleys, while magnificent chaos breaks out at a higher level.

This is an Andalucía true to itself, which opens its heart to the inquisitive traveller – especially in the less-visited rural areas, where there’s an enthusiastic welcome from local people for anyone who cares to stop and explore. And there is much to stop for. Many smaller towns and hill villages offer a treasure store of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

In 1492 Columbus sailed down the Guadalquivir River from Seville and made his exit from this coast to discover the New World. Was anything he ever found better than what he left? Judge for yourself. Even if you have been to Andalucía before, you’ll find new worlds to surprise and delight you amid its grandeur, its glamour and its glories.
