Luxury Sicily Holidays 2017
Sicily is an island of beguiling contrasts. Every civilisation has passed through it, bequeathing marvels fit for the gods and a rich gastronomic tradition.
A former fishing village with a noble heritage, pretty Cefalù, our first port of call in Sicily, stands proud for life’s simple pleasures: a holiday destination of lazy days at the beach, hikes through the beautiful countryside and coffees in medieval squares.
Sicily – where summer lasts longer
With parts of the island on the same latitude as the African coast, Sicily is a place to find the sun – for longer. Springs and autumns spent exploring the sweeping unspoilt countryside, mountain paths and hilltop villages are beautiful here. In the long summers, holidays in Sicily come into their own thanks to its spectacular coastline and plentiful golden sands, not least Cefalù’s own beach, in a wonderful setting with the medieval Old Town as its backdrop.
A beach holiday in a spectacular location
Overlooked by the craggy presence of La Rocca, with its spectacular views from the top, Cefalù has a touch more drama than the average beach holiday. It’s home to a magnificent Duomo including some incredible mosaics inside, as well as winding cobbled streets with restaurants serving the freshest fish. Nearby is the Madonie National Park with its charming hilltop villages, churches and castles – and, in spring, a host of wild flowers turning its walking trails into colourful works of art.
Cefalù is also just over an hour from the atmospheric, down-at-heel elegance of Palermo, with its magnificent opera house, lively street markets and Byzantine churches – and an easy drive from the airport along a lovely coastal road.
