Our holidays on Corsica's west coast are based around Ajaccio – the island's capital and, famously, Napoleon's birthplace. Founded by the Genoese, Ajaccio, occupies a sheltered position at the foot of wooded hills, on a wide bay in the north west. Still a pretty harbour of old, pastel-coloured façades, it is also a stylish centre for shopping, fine dining and enjoying an unhurried apéritif. One of our luxury hotels here, a 19th century mansion, is a short stroll from the very heart of Ajaccio. All of our holidays on the west coast of Corsica include a hire car, and with a great choice of beaches here, unwinding by the sea comes easy.
Cargèse, the Gulf of Porto and the salmon-pink Calanques
The setting for our luxury villa holidays on the west coast of Corsica is breathtaking. An attractive 20-kilometre stretch of coast winds its way north to picturesque Cargèse, perched above a little harbour; while, only 20 minutes’ drive to the north, a unique spectacle unfolds: the Gulf of Porto, an immense body of deep blue water surrounded by red granite cliffs – a protected UNESCO site – and the Calanques de Piana: outcrops of salmon-coloured granite and porphyry, sculpted by the elements into extraordinary shapes. A Corsica west coast holiday near the russet-roofed village of Piana offers a range of excursions and scenic drives, from Porto to the Scandola Nature Reserve, or simply down to the sandy cove of Ficajola below Piana.
