Why Visit Central Corsica?
Central Corsica is a great destination for those who like to get well off the beaten track and explore the wilder side of the island. The Castagniccia takes its name from the chestnut trees that were planted here in the Middle Ages to provide a source of food; today it is the largest chestnut forest in Europe, and the most sparsely populated area of Corsica. Timelessly beautiful, the steep landscape is dotted with tiny hamlets and the occasional vineyard.
The mountain Citadel of Corte is home to the island’s only university; explore the narrow cobbled streets of the haute ville and enjoy the fantastic views from the Citadel. Closer to the coast is Aleria, with its extensive Roman remains, a Genoese fort and various other traces which suggest the site has been occupied for over 8000 years. To the south of Corte lies the Restonica valley, a honey pot destination for walkers and hikers drawn to its stunning gorges, river pools and high mountain lakes.
Walks, Wineries and Wilderness
The Corsican Parc Naturel is a vast protected area covering almost 40% of the entire island, including most of the highest peaks. Species such as wild boar, deer and wildcats are thriving here, and you might be lucky enough to spot vultures or a golden eagle.
Central Corsica has walks to suit all levels: the famous cross-island GR20 route is regarded as the toughest long distance trail in Europe, or you can enjoy many shorter way-marked paths, in particular around the mountain village of Zonza, which is also well known for its (chilly!) river bathing spots.
Oysters have been cultivated at the Etang de Diane near Aleria since Roman times, and the area has become known as a bit of a foodie hot-spot in recent years. The east coast also produces excellent wines from over 20 A.O.C vineyards, the perfect tipple to accompany your fresh seafood lunch.
