The Venice in Peril Fund
In Italy, one such charity which has captured our attention is The Venice in Peril Fund, created after the great flood of 1966 when the waters rose to nearly two metres above mean sea level. Since then the Fund has disbursed millions of pounds for the restoration of Venetian monuments, buildings and works of art.
It is clear, however, that the underlying threat to the city’s physical survival remains the sea and perpetual flooding is becoming a regular and destructive feature of life in Venice.
Venice in Peril helps by financing studies and publications that help sort out these complex issues and make the research about them better known to the layperson as well as to the international scientific community. For just as Venice is loved by people from all over the world, so the question of how it is to be saved is more than just an Italian problem.
Friends of Conservation - You too can help. Simpson Travel is pleased to support Friends of Conservation (FOC).
Founded in 1982 to help prevent wildlife and habitat degradation in East Africa, FOC has expanded to cover projects around the world, including not only wildlife, but also the local communities whose lives are entwined with the wildlife and habitats they work to protect.
It is generally acknowledged that human activity, including travel, is leading to “global warming”. The dramatic release of carbon from burning fossil fuels and from clearing vegetation has led to a 31% increase in concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide compared to pre-industrial concentration.
Flying is the most carbon intensive way to travel. Aviation at present accounts for 3% of greenhouse gases and generates nearly as much carbon dioxide in one year as the total population of Africa. Moreover air travel is growing faster than any other form of transport.
