A rich cultural inheritance

Not a month goes by in Spain when there isn’t some colourful fiesta or special religious feast to take precedence over the comings and goings of everyday life. Spanish people have a deeply rooted respect for history and are passionate about preserving their cultural heritage. Everywhere, and especially in the south, you see the indelible impact of Moorish rule, from wonderful Saracen castles to the flower-filled, tiled courtyards of cities like Granada, Seville, Córdoba and Palma. Many celebrated artists have left their mark too, inspired by the brilliant Mediterranean light and the beauty of the untamed Sierras. Their legacy has not only been in painting but in architecture. For an intriguing mix of styles, each century’s blending into the next, look no further than the quaint Mallorquín town of Sóller. Neo-baroque and neo-classical colonial palaces give way to the flamboyance of Art Nouveau. The domestic delights of sun-filled patios vie with the ecclesiastical exclamation mark of the parish church facade. Designed by Joan Rubío i Bellver, a student of Antonio Gaudí, it adds distinction to the leafy central plaza.
