Driving in Morocco
On the whole, driving in Morocco outside of the larger cities, is an easy and pleasurable experience. Main roads between cities are all in a good state of repair and a new system of motorways (autoroutes nationales) link the main towns along the Atlantic coast from Tangier to Dakhla. Part of the autoroute network is toll roads, connecting Morocco’s main northern cities. Work is in progress to extend the toll road network further from Marrakech to Essaouira. Secondary category roads are known as routes principales.

In addition, when driving along country roads, we advise you to drive slowly and carefully as the roads are generally narrower and may sometimes have bumps and potholes, especially after periods of rain. We do ask that you take particular care when driving on these roads, bearing in mind the conditions of your hire car rental agreement.

We also advise you to take care driving at night in the countryside, as you are quite likely to come across people walking on the roadside or riding bikes without flights.

Distances between major cities are long, so we advise you to make sure you have water with you at all times and adequate petrol in the car.

Please note that we do not recommend that you use your hire car in Marrakech, Fès or Casablanca, unless driving out to leave the city. We can arrange for your hire car to be delivered to your hotel on the day of your departure.

The law insists that you always carry your driving licence and car hire documents with you when driving in Morocco. Seat belts must be worn at all times and you must not use your mobile whilst driving (a fining offence).
