Why visit Göcek?
This is one of the best sailing spots in the Mediterranean and along the pedestrianised waterfront, high-spec yachts vie for attention with an array of colourful wooden gulets. However, strict building controls have preserved the authenticity of this traditional Turkish harbour town and the upmarket boutiques and restaurants, serving up their unique take on traditional Turkish fare, only enhance its appeal.
From Göcek, ever-popular gulet trips carry visitors out to the submerged mystery of Byzantium ruins and away for long, lazy days discovering the Gulf’s 12-island archipelago. Here, calm, clear waters offer plenty of invitations for swim stops and snorkelling, while your captain cooks a lavish barbecue lunch on board.
If you need a beach for soaking up sunshine, there’s a sandy man-made stretch just outside town or make your way to the natural bay of Inlice. The beautiful sweep of Iztuzu beach, with its turtle sanctuary, blue seas and pale sands, is also within easy reach.
An ideal starting point for exploring
For those who prefer adventures on dry land, Göcek is perfectly positioned for coastal forays, as well as inland excursions up to the tiny mountain villages, where traditional teahouse, a-murmur with local conversation, offer wonderful views. A 40-minute drive brings you to the astonishingly beautiful Dalyan Delta and the reed-filled river running through it. 20 minutes, and you reach bustling Fethiye, where the markets can absorb you for hours with their vibrant colour and atmosphere.
If you choose to immerse yourself in Turkey’s abundant history, the Kaya Valley’s atmospheric ‘ghost village’ is close enough for a day trip, as are the ancient sites of Tlos, Pinara, Letoon and Xanthos, steeped in myth and legend.
